The headquarters of a BBQ restaurant in South Carolina burned last night. Just a note from me about this place: The founder/owner had phamlets on every table in the place about slavery and the confederacy. He flew a confederate flag in front of each location.... and his BBQ was so good that blacks still came to buy it.

BBQ restaurant’s namesake advocated for segregation
While many South Carolinians love the local BBQ chain, it has been a place where Black patrons were not welcome.

Owner Maurice Bessinger, who died in 2014, argued a case all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court refusing to serve Black customers inside -- after most restaurants were integrated in 1968. No justices took his side, and in an interview with The State Newspaper in 2000 he said he had no regrets about fighting that case.

Maurice Bessinger was what the Southern Poverty Law Center called a “bigoted barbecue baron,” and ran an organization called the National Association for the Preservation of White People.

The NAACP led a boycott against their BBQ sauce in the early 2000s when Maurice Bessinger protested the removal of the Confederate Civil War battle flag from the S.C. State House by flying it outside all his restaurants. Maurice Bessinger said the boycott cost him $20 million.

Confederate memorabilia, including a pro-slavery book, were distributed near the BBQ restaurants in South Carolina the early 2000s, according to the State Newspaper. Pamphlets that included slavery apologia were passed out.

Now, the restaurant chain is in his family’s second generation. According to his obituary, written by John Monk from The State Newspaper, said the new owner of family business said they do not want to be involved in politics.
