Context⤵️.
Yukpas are the indigenous people from the mountains of Perijá. They are a much less numerous ethnic group compared to their neighbors in the north, the Wayuu people, and a lot more isolated.
While Wayuu people is actually really important -sometimes goodly, sometimes badly- in binational commerce between Venezuela and Colombia, Yukpas on the contrary remained in their mountains until recent years, when they have taken control of the importante road 'Machiques-Colón' which connects Maracaibo with Táchira and the south of Maracaibo Lake's basin.
They have made checkpoints all across that road where they make you pay. If you don't they can break your windows, all in front of police, national guards and nothing happens.
The thing is that the Maduro's regime made with them a deal with the following agreement. Yukpas were going to make traditional handicraft, thousands of pottery and that kind of stuff. The regime would buy it and sell it.
But Maduro's officials didn't pay. So the conflict started.
Yukpas decided to protest. But they started to make something bad. Instead of going against the actual goverment, they started to be harsher in their checkpoints.
This time they installed themselves in El Soler, and people has finally exploded against their abuses.
