President of Costa Rica, Rodrigo Chaves, announced this Wednesday (01.25.2023) that the country will restore consular relations with Venezuela.

In a press conference after the Governing Council, Chaves indicated that there are currently some 25,000 Venezuelans who have a file with the Immigration Directorate but there are around 94,000 pending applications, although many of them have already left the country, others require assistance consular.

"Once the government of Juan Guaidó is canceled, we are going to regularize consular relations so that those Venezuelans have someone to organize their needs and that Costa Ricans in Caracas have support to consult, possibly through a third country and thus avoid budgetary expenses," explained Foreign Minister Arnoldo André.

Costa Rica broke off its relations with Venezuela in 2020 after the government of Nicolás Maduro withdrew the credentials of the then Costa Rican business manager in Caracas, Danilo González, who was the highest-ranking representative.

"The diplomatic position is not changing, what we want is for issues of human rights and well-being of the people, so that they have access to services. It is to reestablish consular relations, do not make interpretations that go beyond that, Chaves said.
