🇻🇪🇦🇷 Argentine Foreign Minister demands immediate release of gendarme detained in Venezuela

Argentine Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno described the detention of gendarme Nahuel Gallo in Venezuela as an enforced disappearance and demanded his immediate release, as more than a year has passed since his arrest.

Buenos Aires denounced the measure as arbitrary and illegal and criticized the government of Nicolás Maduro for human rights violations.

US Treasury Department, through the OFAC, extended the protection over the shares of Citgo Petroleum until February 3, 2026, which prevents any sale or transfer without express authorization from Washington. The measure freezes the progress of the judicial auction in Delaware, despite there already being a preliminary winner with an offer of $5.9 billion for the refiner's parent company.

The extension seeks to allow for negotiations between creditors and representatives of Venezuela that would avoid the forced liquidation of the company. While the government of Nicolás Maduro qualifies the process as a "looting", the US Treasury proposes this pause as a tool to facilitate refinancing agreements under a favorable licensing scheme.
