🇺🇸🇸🇻 HRW holds the U.S. and El Salvador responsible for torture and forced disappearances of Venezuelans sent to CECOT

A joint report by Human Rights Watch (HRW) and the Salvadoran organization Cristosal revealed that 252 Venezuelan citizens deported by the United States to El Salvador between March and April of this year were victims of torture, sexual violence, forced disappearance, and inhumane detention conditions at the Terrorism Confinement Center (CECOT), the mega-prison built by Nayib Bukele's government.

The document, titled “They Arrived in Hell,” denounces that the abuses committed against Venezuelans, Colombians, Salvadorians and many others were not isolated incidents but part of a systematic practice of human rights violations, tolerated — and funded — by both governments. “The Trump administration paid El Salvador millions of dollars to arbitrarily detain Venezuelans as well other latina amiercan people who were then subjected almost daily to brutal beatings by Salvadoran security forces,” said Juanita Goebertus, director of HRW’s Americas Division.

Venezuela falls in the internet freedom ranking and is among the 10 worst countries

Venezuela dropped four points in the global internet freedom ranking compiled by the organization Freedom House, going from 30 to 26 — on a scale where 100 represents greater freedom — placing it among the 10 countries with the worst digital conditions in the world, alongside China (9), Myanmar (9), Iran (13), Russia (17), Belarus (20), Cuba (21), Vietnam (22), Saudi Arabia (25), and Sudan (27).

The report “Freedom on the Net 2025,” which evaluates the period from June 1, 2024, to May 31, 2025, warns that digital freedom in Venezuela “declined significantly” during the last year, in the context of the July 2024 presidential election and its repressive aftermath.
