More than a thousand schoolchildren in Shenzhen Road Primary School (Liaocheng, Shandong Province of China) gathered on the playground to play chess on April 15.

Chess has been in this school’s curriculum for 3 years. This is the second edition of the "Liangzhi Cup" held among its pupils. "We hope that every student will develop from a pawn to a queen, like in chess, continuing to reap success and achieve their personal best," said Song Demin, the school's principal.

Remember Tani Adewumi? The Nigerian refugee boy hit the headlines when he won the 2019 K-3 New York State chess championship at the age of 8 while living in a homeless shelter. Nicholas Kristof reported the story in the New York Times, the readers stepped up and helped the family get housing and his parents get jobs.

Here is a joyful update. On May 1st, 2021, at only 10 years old, Adewumi crossed the 2200 rating threshold needed to achieve the official US_chess title of National Master, making him one of the youngest chess players in history to do so.

"I believe that Chess possesses a magic that is also a help in advanced age. A rheumatic knee is forgotten during a game of chess and other events can seem quite unimportant in comparison with a catastrophe on the chessboard."
