U.S. law allowed children to be mailed until 1913

Until then, parents could contract with the postal service to send their children accompanied by a postal worker.

The phenomenon was called baby mail. A package and stamps cost about 50 cents.

In 1913, The New York Times published a letter from a Georgia resident who even wanted to mail order a baby for adoption and asked how best to "package" the baby to comply with the rules.

On June 13, 1920, the Post Office Department issued a regulation stating that children (and people in general) could not be mailed.
