Pablo's gone from driving cabs to serving in the military in Ukraine.
Living in Montevideo and working as a cab driver, one night he was assaulted by 3 armed men and shot in the hip while resisting. While he was recovering, he saw the war break out in Ukraine. He has already following the news since Russia annexed Crimea, Donetsk, Luhansk and Donbass. He felt disapproval and even hatred towards Russia growing inside him.
Although he was still recovering, in 2023 he made the decision to get involved in the defence of Ukraine.
In May 2023, he arrived at the Polish-Ukrainian border. He then travelled by train to Ternopil, where he registered at the Army Recruiting Centre. A month and a half later, he was sent together with eight other foreign fighters to the 204th Artillery Battalion of the Territorial Defense Forces. He received two months of training and was sent on a four-month mission in Donbass.
His father, who did not agree with the decision to go to fight for Ukraine, died a few months after Pablo left Montevideo.
His 16-year-old son, with whom he didn't have the best relationship before leaving, has improved a lot and thinks there might be a chance of being reunited in Ukraine.
In the meantime, Pablo plans to settle down in the country he's fighting for and apply for citizenship.
