Approaching Ashura

Whoever strives to fast Ashura is rewarded even if he is off by a day, like he who strives to pray toward the qiblah is rewarded even if he misses the qiblah; for the reward of the Creator is not like the reward of the creation, whereby only the one who hits the mark is rewarded.

Fasting Ashura expiates the sins of the previous year. Whoever fasts the tenth day and doesn’t fast a day before or after it, acquires the reward of having his sins expiated, but misses out on the reward of opposing the Jews, and at the same time is not sinful for not opposing [the Jews].

The Day of Ashura 1446

The tenth of Muharram marks the day Allah saved Musa and his people from the tyranny of Firʿawn and his troops.

On that day, many of Musa’s followers gave up hope and thought they were defeated because all odds were against them. But not Musa. He had certainty in Allah’s promise of victory:

{ فَلَمَّا تَرَاءَى الْجَمْعَانِ قَالَ أَصْحَابُ مُوسَى إِنَّا لَمُدْرَكُونَ • قَالَ كَلا إِنَّ مَعِيَ رَبِّي سَيَهْدِينِ }

“When the two groups came face to face, the companions of Musa said, ‘We will surely be overtaken!’ Musa said, ‘Absolutely not! My Lord is certainly with me; He will guide me.’”

Three White Days - Muharram | July

3 White Days for Muharram 1446 | FRI 19th - SUN 21st of July 2024 📆

The Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“Fasting three days of each month is fasting for a lifetime, and ayyam al-beed are the 13th, 14th and 15th.”

[An-Nasa’i, (2420)].

The Superiority of Fasting in Muharram

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) said:

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “The best fast after Ramadan is in the month of Allah Muharram.”

[Narrated by Muslim (1982)]

If you are unable to fast you can still partake in this opportunity of gaining reward by spreading the word.

Perhaps one will fast because of your message.

Bitesize Tafsir

In surah al-Nisa', Allah says:

They ask you for a ruling about women. Say: Allah gives you a ruling about them and what is recited to you in the Book about the orphan girls to whom you do not give what is decreed for them, even while you desire to marry them, and about the downtrodden children, and that you should maintain things for the orphans fairly. And whatever good you do, Allah is All-Knowing of it. [127]

In his tafsir, al-Tabari (‏رحمه الله) reports:

Regarding the phrase, "And the downtrodden children," al-Suddi said:

They used to not give any inheritance to young girls or young boys, so Allah commanded them to uphold their rights with *al-qist* - fairly. And *al-qist* means to give each person the rights due to him, whether male or female, giving the same regard to young and old alike.

Mixing deeds

Imam Ibn Hazm (‏رحمه الله) writes:

Whoever has been tested by procrastinating regarding Repentance, and stalling the soul, then let him increase in good deeds as much as he can, perhaps his good deeds will wipe out his sins, and he becomes amongst those who Allah said about them:

(And [there are] others who have acknowledged their sins. They had mixed [i.e., polluted] a righteous deed with another that was bad. Perhaps Allāh will turn to them in forgiveness. Indeed, Allāh is Forgiving and Merciful.) Al-Tawbah, 102.

10 causes that remove punishment for a sin

The punishment for a sin committed by a believer is removed in ten ways:

1. He repents to Allah (Tawbah), so Allah accepts his repentance, for the one who repents from sin is like the one who has no sin.

2. He seeks forgiveness from Allah (Istighfar), so Allah forgives him.

3. He does good deeds that erase his sin for good deeds erase bad ones.

4. His believing brethren pray for him or seek forgiveness for his sins during his life or death.

5. Or they [ask Allah] to bestow on him as gift from the reward for their deeds, with which Allah benefits him.

6. His Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) intercedes for him.

7. Allah tests him with trials in this world which expiate his sin.

8. Allah tests him in al-Barzakh (the intermediate life in the grave, between the death and the Day of Judgment) which expiates his sin.

9. Allah tests him in the various stages of the Day of Judgment which expiates his sins.

10. Or the Most Merciful of those who have mercy has mercy on him.

Whoever, then, is missed by these ten cannot blame anyone but himself.

Prayer - The Source of All Success

Imam Ibn al-Qayyim (‏رحمه الله) writes:

Salah has an incredible impact in warding off worldly harm, especially when perfectly fulfilled with its due right outwardly and inwardly. As such, nothing averts the harms of this world and the Hereafter, nor attracts the benefits of both worlds, like salah does.

The secret to this is that salah is one’s connection with Allah the Exalted and Majestic. Thus, the doors of goodness are opened for the servant according to their connection with their Lord, whilst the means of evil are removed from them. Additionally, the means of divine ability (tawfiq) abundantly come to them. Similarly, well-being, success, independence, comfort, bliss, happiness and joy are all readily and swiftly available to them.

[Zaad al-Ma’ad, 4/304]
Reward Equivalent To A Year Of Fasting And Praying

From Aws Bin Aws Ath-Thaqafi (رضي الله عنه) who said I heard the Messenger of Allah [ﷺ] saying:

❝Whoever performs a perfect Ghusl on Friday then goes very early to the Khutbah, walking and not riding, sits close to the Imam, listens and does not speak or keep himself busy then for every step towards the Khutbah is the reward equivalent to a year of fasting and praying.❞

[Collected By Ahmad, Abu Dawood, Tirmidhi | Authenticated By Al-Albaani In Saheeh Al-Jama As-Sagheer, (No. 6405)]

Al-Mulla Ali Al-Qari [رحمه الله] said:

❝The people of knowledge say: 'We do not know of a Hadeeth of the Prophet [ﷺ] which has more reward than this Hadeeth.'❞

Unmatched Divine Words

One of the proofs Shaykh Abdallah pointed out to us that the Quran is the speech of Allah is that human authorship cannot help but indulge in transient worldly concerns, pride, and vanity.

Look into the subject matter of even the most highly regarded pre-Islamic poetry: the occasional lines of insight and wisdom are connected and carried by empty talk of ancient feuds, heroic deeds, and sexual conquest.

Read also the embarrassing forgeries of Musailimah The Liar, the one who claimed to be a prophet after Islam had been established; there exists for human authorship a tension between style and content. Whenever the style is achieved the content suffers and vice versa.

Not so the Quran; the trained eye will find the most sublime style matched by the most noble, weighty content. Isn't it time we took seriously the study of this book?

Sadaqah - Draw closer to Allah

Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:

“A dinar which you spend for the sake of Allah, a dinar which you spend on freeing a slave, a dinar which you give in charity to a poor person and a dinar which you spend on your family – the greatest of these in reward is that which you spend on your family.” (1)

Imam Ibn al-Qayyim (رحمه الله) said:

“Indeed, sadaqah has a remarkable effect in repelling an array of tribulations, even if it (sadaqah) were to come from a wicked sinner or an oppressor – rather even from a disbeliever.

For indeed; Allah, The Most High by way of it repels an array of tribulations, and this is an affair which is known by the people – their exclusive ones as well as the general ones, and the people of the earth – all of them acknowledge that – because they have indeed experienced it.” (2)

The True Prayer

If you stand and pray (after proper Wudu), praise Allah as He deserves & empty your heart to Allah except that your sins are wiped away like the day your mother gave birth to you.

[Sahih Muslim]

Amazing rewards for 2 units of prayer.

May Allah allow us to complete such prayers
Nobility of Travel and Residence

Rabī'ah ibn 'Abd al-Raḥmān said:

"Noble conduct applies to both travel and residence.

Noble conduct while traveling involves:
1. Sharing provisions
2. Minimizing disagreements with companions
3. Joking frequently, but not in ways that displease Allah

Noble conduct while at home includes:
1. Maintaining numerous friendships
2. Reciting the Qur'an
3. Attending mosques regularly"

Rawḍat al-'Uqalā' (94)

The Good Life

To whoever, male or female, does good deeds and has faith, We shall give a good life and reward them according to the best of their actions.

[16:97 - An-Nahl, Ayah 97].

If people were to rectify their religion, their dunya-related affairs would automatically be rectified, for Islam came to rectify both religion and dunya.

Whoever thinks that the rectification of his religion will corrupt his dunya-related affairs is mistaken in his understanding of the religion or his understanding of the dunya.

Winter Ibadah

As the Salah times go back and we enter the very short days and long nights, take benefit of the following:

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: ❝Fasting in the winter is the easy prize.❞ (❶)

Imam Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali (‎رحمه الله) commented:

“And the meaning of it being an easy prize is that it is a prize obtained without any battle or effort or hardship. So, the owner of this prize has been given it as a favour without any effort on his part."

He also mentioned, “Winter is the best season for the believer because Allah strengthens his practice in it by making worship easy for him.

This is because in winter, the believer can fast during the day with ease without suffering from hunger and thirst. The days are short and cold, and he therefore doesn’t feel the hardship of fasting.

As for praying at night in the winter due to its long nights, one can have his share of sleep and then get up to pray afterwards and recite all that he usually recites of the Qur’an while he has had enough sleep.

So, he can combine between the sleep that he needs and the usual amount of recitation of the Qur’an that he completes in a day. So, he fulfills the interests of both his religion and the comfort of his body." (❷)

❶ - [Ahmad (4/335)].
❷ - [Lata’if al-Ma’arif].
al-Khashyah & al-Dhikr

The tabi'ee Sa'eed Ibn al-Jubayr (‏رحمه الله) is reported to have said:

[الخشية: أن تخشى الله تعالى حتى تحول خشيته بينك وبين معصيته؛ فتلك الخشية، والذكر: طاعة الله، فمن أطاع الله فقد ذكره، ومن لم يطعه فليس بذاكرٍ؛ وإنْ أكْثَرَ التسبيح وقراءة الكتاب]

*al-Khashyah* is that you fear Allah to the extent that your fear of Him comes between you and disobeying Him. That is *khashyah*.

And *al-dhikr* is obedience to Allah; whoever obeys Allah has remembered Allah, and whoever has not obeyed Him is not one who remembers Allah even if he performs a lot of *tasbeeh* and reciting the Quran.

[Imam Ibn al-Mubarak (‏رحمه الله), al-Zuhd]
