🇪🇸 Spain’s Parliament Rejects Housing Bills Amid Nationwide Protests

Spain’s parliament has rejected two government-backed housing measures aimed at addressing the country’s growing housing crisis, dealing a setback to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s minority government.

The bills included automatic renewal of rental contracts, stronger protections for vulnerable tenants facing eviction, and measures targeting investment firms that buy properties for higher returns.

The votes came amid a week of nationwide protests over rising housing costs. Demonstrations were sparked by the eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal, who had lived in her Madrid apartment for around seven decades.

The first bill was rejected 178–172, while the second failed 184–166. Further demonstrations have been planned across Spain.

🇵🇱 Poland Drafts New “Pre-War” Defence Law Amid Rising Security Concerns

Poland’s Defence Ministry is preparing legislation designed to strengthen the country’s readiness in the event of war.

Deputy Defence Minister Cezary Tomczyk confirmed that the bill has been under preparation for several weeks. The proposed law could allow the earlier movement of Polish and allied troops, improve coordination between Poland’s defence system and NATO’s response mechanisms, and introduce new rules for defence planning, infrastructure preparation, training and exercises.

The legislation is also expected to address modern security challenges, including hybrid threats, cyberattacks and disinformation.

Tomczyk described it as a “pre-war law”, while stressing that the purpose of the preparations is to ensure that a state of war never occurs.

The draft remains under internal consultation and has not yet been submitted to parliament.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov says Moscow is open to dialogue with all countries on Black Sea security, including possible discussions with Turkey, India and Egypt.

However, he said Russia is not currently involved in any concrete talks on bilateral agreements.
