Multiple levels of functionality through a complex integration of supply chains that coexist interoperable but not interdependent. This assures system stability despite fluctuations in climate or energy and materials throughput, including backup and fallback capacities. Layered design is vital for assuring that the systems 'works no matter what'.

To mitigate risk of 'all eggs in one basket' and consistent with diversifying investments, multiple isolated lines of development are permitted to proceed in parallel, each of which may be based on different assumptions.

Studying the form and function of systems in nature reveals much about what can be innovated in other contexts. Nature has already done all the hard work and research. Let's use it!

An ecological system exists in a constant state of tension between its parts. The tension is healthy and integral for the whole system to thrive. Instead of trying to eliminate tension, we see where it can be made useful through complementarity and opponent processing. The optimal balance of tension assures the syntegrity and syntropy of the whole.

Variation is a necessary condition for evolution to occur. Excessive uniformity or replication can stifle a systems ability to find the optimum. Permitting variation across designs and ideas assures that the system will find better operating conditions to stay viable.

The gold standard of optimal design. Often the basis of both resilient and robust structures, fractal organization efficiently enables a simultaneously scalable and shrinkable system. Scale invariant solutions that can expand and contract as if breathing are what assures a system's longevity.

We learned in 2017 that the aerodynamic shape of buildings at the Venus Center in Florida easily withstand major hurricanes and tornadoes. Hurricane Irma was the most damaging to the local area to date. We are relieved to announce that hurricane Milton shifted North and passed by the Venus Center. We are sorry to hear others did not fare as well. We experienced a moderate windstorm and light rain but still have electricity. However, past experience shows that flood waters come in the few days after the hurricane. Most buildings were either out of reach of the more severe hurricane Irma floodwaters or were only minimally affected. We await what the next few days may bring after the latest hurricane Milton.

The process by which modular parts interact with standards and protocol to enable smooth communication, all brought under one ultimate purpose, enables a system to flow. Functions and processes of the supply chain are made an integral part of the system, reducing externalities and reliance on outsourcing.

For much of history, ideology and superstition have been the methods of explanation and along with politics have been the methods of decision. The Venus Project advocates the methods of science as one paradigm for arriving at explanations and decisions.

Trial and error has been the simplest method of problem solving throughout history. Always in service of 'workability', modern engineering provides pragmatic criteria by which optimization can be measured. Indispensable for innovation, engineering is a vital paradigm for translating our ideals to reality.

Based on a principle of integration, holistic design expands the boundary conditions to include more variables to minimize externalities, negative retroactions, and systemic dysfunction. Holistic design promotes wiser outcomes, longer term success, context fitness, and ecological validity.

Systems thinking provides the habits of thought that promote the proper modeling of reality as emergent systems of subsystems, emphasizing interaction, dependency, feedback, contingency, and consequence. Without systems thinking it is difficult to arrive at holistic understanding to enable better decisions.

Complexity thinking occupies the gray areas beyond systems thinking where uncertainty is high and predictability is low when the variables are too ambiguous to identify or too numerous to manage. Complexity thinking provides habits of thought that manages in terms of wholes rather than parts and encourages influence rather than control of a system. Complexity thinking modulates the evolutionary potential of a system rather than specifying an outcome.

Interdisciplinarity is valuable in building connections across disciplines. Transdisciplinarity is valuable in abstracting from those connections and intersections to build meta-models, shared conceptual frameworks, and new terminology that binds the knowledge of various fields together into a new context-specific field.
