Trial and error has been the simplest method of problem solving throughout history. Always in service of 'workability', modern engineering provides pragmatic criteria by which optimization can be measured. Indispensable for innovation, engineering is a vital paradigm for translating our ideals to reality.

Based on a principle of integration, holistic design expands the boundary conditions to include more variables to minimize externalities, negative retroactions, and systemic dysfunction. Holistic design promotes wiser outcomes, longer term success, context fitness, and ecological validity.

Systems thinking provides the habits of thought that promote the proper modeling of reality as emergent systems of subsystems, emphasizing interaction, dependency, feedback, contingency, and consequence. Without systems thinking it is difficult to arrive at holistic understanding to enable better decisions.

Complexity thinking occupies the gray areas beyond systems thinking where uncertainty is high and predictability is low when the variables are too ambiguous to identify or too numerous to manage. Complexity thinking provides habits of thought that manages in terms of wholes rather than parts and encourages influence rather than control of a system. Complexity thinking modulates the evolutionary potential of a system rather than specifying an outcome.

Interdisciplinarity is valuable in building connections across disciplines. Transdisciplinarity is valuable in abstracting from those connections and intersections to build meta-models, shared conceptual frameworks, and new terminology that binds the knowledge of various fields together into a new context-specific field.

Narrative is the oldest method of sense-making and transmitting knowledge across time. For that reason, it comes most natural to human cognition. Narrative is effective to build context, simulate complex causality, and reveal the natural ambiguity of reality. Narrative remains an effective method of building holistic understanding in both science and outside of science.
