According to science, emotions are complex psychological and physiological responses to stimuli that influence our thoughts, behaviours, and perceptions. But in simpler terms, I believe emotions are the way our body expresses itself when words cannot.

Here’s the interesting part: our body is not great at differentiating between what is real and what is not.

For example, imagine you see a tiger, your heart races, your body panics, you run, and you feel exhausted. The tiger is about to eat your leg, and you scream - and then, suddenly, you wake up. Oh, it was just a dream. But you felt all the emotions as if it were real. Your body takes a few minutes to accept that it was only a dream.

The same thing happens in our daily lives. We often live in a constant state of fight or flight, and our emotions are not under control. The problem arises when these emotions start to dictate our lives.

"No, I don’t want to study, I don’t feel good." "I don’t want to meet friends, I feel weird today." Over time, this begins to harm our daily life.

I talk to so many students who are taking anxiety pills, feeling depressed, and often finding heavy emotional challenges causing daily trouble.

Is there a solution to this? Yes, indeed, there is, and it’s quite similar to overcoming the problem of overthinking: truly understanding what emotions are.

First, understand that emotions are temporary. They don’t last forever. They fade quickly if you don’t give them attention, and they linger if you give them importance. In both cases, they don’t last forever, and that’s a relief!

Next, realise that emotions are not always real. They don’t always reflect reality. Maybe you're feeling insecure, but in reality, there is no real threat. Perhaps you're feeling sad, but life is going well.

This realisation - that emotions are not always real, detaches you from them and allows you to observe them from a distance, instead of identifying with them. It’s a deeper way of looking at things.

I personally do this to handle emotions. I consider emotions to be like trains, and myself as a person sitting on a railway station bench.

Every now and then, a train full of emotions arrives, inviting me to board. It’s my choice whether to get on or let it pass by.

If I choose to board the train, I feel everything that train carries - all the emotions. But if I simply sit and observe the train coming and leaving, I feel relieved.

The best way to handle emotions is to let the train come, stand for a while, make you a bit uncomfortable and then leave you with peace.
You should only be an observer, not a participant.

When the train leaves, you can calmly analyse why it came, why it invited you, and find the cause behind it. This way, you can also find a solution to prevent it from coming back.
