Chinese Students in Groningen (Netherlands) started a petition to force their universities not to work with the Confucius institution , according to them this is a way for China to influence students and professionals who work at these universities.
The Chinese students want to remain anonymous out of fear for their security.
The problem is even wider and plays also on other universities with a growing concern over the influence of China

This is one of the instigators of the petition a Chinese student from Hong Kong that whants to stay anonymous out of fear for the security of family in Hong Kong.
Then the English voice starts...
Talking about the espionage and limiting of academic freedom...
(The women in yellow is the director dismissing it all and calling it fake news)
The bald guy says he sees his students in fear not feeling free to comment on subjects on Hong Kong in class out of fear leaks to Hong Kong and the consequences.
In 2018 the AIVD ( Dutch Intelligence Agency) was already aware China used education to further its influence, the concerns are not new but the effects are now noticeable in the classrooms.(academic loss of freedom)
It's really sad that Chinese students don't feel free here to express themselves here on a Dutch university the man says

It's showing a contract between the Confucius institution and the university that gives the Chinese Governement the authority and power to fire professors when he or she does something that damages the image of China (and what the definition of that is, is for to China to determine). So, a professor working on a Dutch university can be fired by the Chinese.
Then she says it's not only on this particular university but throughout western countries that already broken ties with the Confucius institution. Due to a scandal in Brussels were a director was suspected of espionage and kicked out of the country. Critics see this as an extention of the Chinese secret services, and there is a lot of turmoil amongst the scientists amd politicians regarding this controversial contract .
They are stating that science can't be for sale
