Welcome to Britain's odd/strange/outlandish festival, the Worm Charming Championship.

Every year, teams meet on the Cornish coast to lure worms from the ground. Some ways/methods/methodologies are scientific, while others are not. Six-year-old Sunny and eight-year-old Luna are last year's winners. They caught 20 worms the previous year and want to win again. The competition is hard/tough/arduous this year. Teams use different ways to make the worms come out. Luna and Sunny copy birds and they stamp like rain. Others act/pretend/simulate to be seagulls or run around. Worm safety is important, with rules to protect them. Organizer Georgia Gendell talks about the fun and serious sides of the event. She says that worms are important for soil and food.

The Tennessee Worm Wranglers won this year with 32 worms. Luna and Sunny don't win but have fun and promise to go back/return/revert next year.

Ukraine needs/requires/necessitates more soldiers. Especially in some areas, there may not be enough soldiers soon.

Ukraine's parliament okayed/passed/ratified a new law which will make it easier to get/recruit/conscript new soldiers. The law says that all men aged 18 to 60 must carry papers which show that they joined the military. The law also offers rewards like money or help to buy a house or car.

But there is bad news for the soldiers who are already serving. The new rule/legislation/statute doesn't say how long they will serve. Before the new law, soldiers could stop their service after three years. Now, they can't. This makes things hard for soldiers hitting/fighting/combating since the start of the war.

Justin Timberlake was caught/arrested/apprehended for drunk driving in the Hamptons, New York. He has to go to court.

Timberlake has two concerts in Chicago this weekend and two in New York City next week. He was taken early Tuesday morning, just after midnight. Timberlake spoke before about his problems/troubles/tribulations with drinking.

The court in Sag Harbor will read the claims/charges/indictments against him. The news spread fast/quickly/hastily in the US media. The Suffolk County District Attorney's Office said/confirmed/corroborated the charges but gave no more details. We will hear more after Timberlake goes to court.

Americans celebrate Juneteenth on June 19 each year. It became a US federal holiday in 2021, thanks to President Joe Biden.

The day marks/remembers/commemorates the freedom of enslaved Black Americans. It began/started/originated in the South but became more known after the 2020 protests/marches/demonstrations when the police killed George Floyd and others. People/Folks/Individuals celebrate Juneteenth with marches and parties. Some states still don't have this holiday because there is no law for it. Juneteenth also reminds us of racial problems in the US.

Juneteenth combines the words June and 19th. On this day in 1865, a general told slaves in Galveston, Texas, that they were free. It happened/occurred/transpired years after President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. Texas made it a holiday in 1980. Now, it is a holiday in at least 28 states and Washington, DC.

Experts say that people don't need goosebumps to survive. Goosebumps happen when we are cold, watch a scary/frightening/terrifying movie, or listen to our favorite song. An strong/intense/vehement emotion, such as fear or anger, makes our body make more adrenaline. Adrenaline is a hormone which makes the heart beat faster, and it causes goosebumps.

World leaders met in Switzerland to discuss peace in Ukraine.

Over 90 countries came, but China and Russia didn't. This made the meeting less strong/powerful/formidable. Russia has its peace plans. The war in Gaza also removes/takes away/diverts attention from Ukraine. The leaders talked about food and nuclear safety. Turkey and Saudi Arabia said that Russia needs to join/participate/partake for real progress.

The leaders say that Russia is blamed for/responsible for/culpable for suffering and damage in Ukraine. Russia must respect Ukraine's land. Also, Ukraine should control its nuclear power plant and sea ports again. President Zelenskiy was happy with the meeting and said it would help calm/peace/concord.

In Sao Paulo, many women marched/protested/demonstrated against a new bill in Brazil's Congress.

This bill would treat ending pregnancies/abortions/terminations after 22 weeks as murder and give six to 20 years in prison. The protesters marched on Paulista Avenue with banners against the bill. They called it very bad for women's rights. People of all ages yelled/shouted/vociferated, 'A child is not a mother, a rapist is not a father'. In Brazil, abortion is allowed only if there is rape, problems during pregnancy, or danger to the mother's life. Religious lawmakers supported the new bill. Feminist groups said this bill gives worse penalties/punishments/sanctions than for rapists and will hurt children who are hurt by family members.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva called the bill crazy and said he would fight for the present/current/extant laws.

Peter Higgs is a famous physicist who won the Nobel Prize. Last week, he died/passed away/perished at the age of 94.

People know Higgs for his theory which suggests the being/existence/manifestation of the Higgs boson, often called the 'God particle'. According to Higgs, this particle gives mass to other particles and plays an important role in creating the world/universe/cosmos. Higgs made/developed/formulated this theory in the 1960s, and decades later, scientists at CERN's Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland proved it.

Although people normally used the term 'God particle', Higgs was a modest person and he focused on science. Finding the Higgs boson was a big finding/discovery/breakthrough which helped scientists understand particles and forces in the universe.
