BREAKING: EU age verification app to ban any Android system not licensed by Google
Reddit

The EU is currently developing a whitelabel app to perform privacy-preserving (at least in theory) age verification to be adopted and personalized in the coming months by member states. The app is open source and available here: https://github.com/eu-digital-identity-wallet/av-app-android-wallet-ui.

Problem is, the app is planning to include remote attestation feature to verify the integrity of the app: https://github.com/eu-digital-identity-wallet/av-app-android-wallet-ui?tab=readme-ov-file#disclaimer. This is supposed to provide assurance to the age verification service that the app being used is authentic and running on a genuine operating system. Genuine in the case of Android means:

β€’ The operating system was licensed by Google
β€’ The app was downloaded from the Play Store (thus requiring a Google account)
β€’ Device security checks have passed

While there is value to verify device security, this strongly ties the app to many Google properties and services, because those checks won't pass on an aftermarket Android OS, even those which increase security significantly like GrapheneOS, because the app plans to use Google "Play Integrity", which only allows Google licensed systems instead of the standard Android attestation feature to verify systems.

This also means that even though you can compile the app, you won't be able to use it, because it won't come from the Play Store and thus the age verification service will reject it.

The issue has been raised here https://github.com/eu-digital-identity-wallet/av-app-android-wallet-ui/issues/10 but no response from team members as of now.

In short: You can only be a full citizen of the EU if you accept the ToS from Google.

Android (in Canary branch) now supports graphical Linux applications via an updated Linux Terminal feature. This tool runs a Debian GNU/Linux 12 virtual machine using the Android Virtualization Framework (based on KVM and crosvm). Users can launch a GUI session via a new "Display" button in the terminal, which activates graphics redirection in the Android environment.

The system launches the Weston compositor to provide a minimal window session, allowing execution of GUI-based Linux programs such as Gedit, the default editor app in Gnome. X11 applications run through the XWayland component, and the setup supports hardware-accelerated graphics using VirGL for virtual GPU performance.

Europe is changing β€” but not by accident.

Censorship is rising. Elections are manipulated. Borders are exploited. Democracy is being quietly dismantled by those in power.

We investigate what others won’t:
– How free speech is being erased
– How unelected elites pressure entire nations
– How propaganda networks shape public opinion
– And who truly benefits from the chaos
This isn’t a newsfeed. It’s a warning system.

Apple x Samsung is Real

Apple started promoting Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 7 in China.

Apple support in China accidentally posted a promotion video of Galaxy Z Flip 7 featuring Galaxy AI while promoting their own App Store. It was later taken down but still hilarious to promote Samsung foldables when Samsung often mocks Apple for not launching a foldable yet.

Google ordered to pay $12,500 to policeman after Street View camera caught him naked

An Argentine captured naked in his yard by a Google Street View camera has been awarded compensation by a court after his bare behind was splashed over the internet for all to see.

The poliecman was standing naked in the backyard of his home in Argentina when a Google camera mounted on a vehicle photographed him in 2015. The camera managed to captured his buttocks and back, and the photo viral after local television station published it as part of a special news segment on the peculiarities behind Google Street View in the city of 45,000 residents.

The cop eventually learned of the image while watching a news program and filed a lawsuit against Google Argentina in 2017. The officer claimed he was ridiculed by his neighbors and that he would only leave his home to work.

'In the app, when the front of the house is displayed, the street numbers are easily readable,' the judges said in their opinion. 'Moving the cursor allows you to zoom in and out from the street, allowing you to see inside the house and even make out a front yard/garden behind the fence. It is clear that in this case it was not her face that was visible, but her entire naked body, an image that should also have been avoided.'

Google Argentina was instructed to eliminate the photograph from its Street View and faces a fine of $78 for each day that it fails to do so. CablevisiΓ³n SA and El Censor SRL, who were also sued for publishing the photos on television, cleared by the court of any wrongdoing.
