Some people say that products should be designed to last as long as possible. Others say that it is more important for products to be as cheap as possible.
Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
People have differing views regarding whether the products should be long-lasting or they should be more affordable for all. While the latter plays more important role when buying certain items, I personally fall for the former camp.
Proponents of cheap products in the markets believe that the economy of the country can benefit largely from such products due to the smooth and quick flow of the circular economy. To be more precise, the cheaper the product is, the more likely people are going to buy it by which people pay consumer taxes to support the economy. Also, consumers are far more likely to enjoy the availability of wide range of affordable products. For example, we can see such instances with commonly bought products such as distilled bottled water which is healthy and budget-friendly. Therefore, increase of cheaper products in any economy can broaden the diversity of consumer expenditures and consumable products.
On the other hand, I generally believe that production companies should generate products and items for long-term use as much as possible. One essential reason for that is the consumer culture which is derived mostly from too much consumption, and result in larger waste generation. It is true that buying more and more products, be it food or non-edible items for home or office use, which might last for short-term only, can increase the volume of waste generation. A clear example of this can be flat screen TVs consumers usually buy in around 4 years of renewal. If the durability of it increases for another 4 years, it will probably decrease our contribution to the waste generation which is a large contributor to the ecological problems. So, companies should be primarily focusing on producing long-lasting products.
In conclusion, despite the heating debate over the essence of producing items for longer-term use or cheaper alternatives, the latter is as important as the other. However, I strongly believe in the durable use of products for the sake of reduction of waste.
