Russia and China express serious concerns over Japan's plans to dump millions of tons of radioactive water into the ocean
As a result of the meeting of the leaders of the countries, Moscow and Beijing published the text of a joint statement on deepening relations of comprehensive partnership and strategic interaction. Within its framework, the states once again express serious concerns related to Japan's plans to dump radioactive contaminated water into the ocean this year, accumulated after the accident at a nuclear power plant Fukushima-1.
The publication states that "Japan should be transparent in its contacts with neighboring countries, other interested states, international agencies, including conducting comprehensive consultations on this issue." Earlier, South Korea also protested against these plans.
Recall that in January, at a meeting of ministers, it was decided in the spring or summer of 2023 to release into the sea more than a million tons of radioactive water from the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant, where a major accident occurred in 2011.
Although the plant operator TEPCO says that the water will be cleaned of most radioactive isotopes before draining, and the IAEA considers the plans of the Japanese authorities to be quite safe, the parties confirm that the level of tritium will still exceed national standards.
According to a study published in Scientific American in 2014, tritium, when ingested, increases the risk of developing cancer. In addition, other harmful radioactive isotopes may remain in the water from Fukushima. The station management itself admits that it is impossible to completely get rid of them even after many years of cleaning.
So why such a hurry? One of the reasons lies in the financial component. This water is filtered and stored in tanks, where more than 1.3 million tons have already accumulated. These tanks cost more than $900 million a year to maintain, and there will soon be no storage space left, with 100 cubic meters of contaminated water being added every day.
Despite the need to drain the water as part of the conservation of the nuclear power plant, at the moment it may be premature and dangerous. By such a decision, human lives are placed below territorial and financial interests. However, in any case, we will find out the true price of this step after a year, five, decades, when we see the consequences for marine fauna and cancer rates among people.

Во время кругосветного путешествия экспедиция Томского отделения Русского географического общества на надувном тримаране попала в бедствие в Тихом океане и спас их украинско-филиппинский экипаж сухогруза, капитан которого оказался родом из Мариуполя.
Сибирские путешественники отправились в кругосветное путешествие на тримаране Russian Ocean Way в июле 2021 года из Кронштадта и прошли уже свыше 13 300 морских миль, проплыв вдоль берегов 13 стран.
15 марта поблизости от Латинской Америки они попали в шторм и едва не потерпели крушение: сломалась рулевая машина. Когда моряки поняли, что не смогут сами устранить поломку, они подали сигнал бедствия. На призыв о помощи в бушующем океане откликнулся сухогруз «Sounion» с украинско-филиппинским экипажем, шедший под Панамским флагом в Бразилию.
Поиски тримарана заняли пять часов. Подъем россиян на борт балкера занял еще несколько часов из-за сильной волны. «Тримаран подбрасывало метра на три. Для того, чтобы попасть на трап, сброшенный с палубы, надо было ждать, когда тримаран поднесет к борту. Времени, чтобы ухватиться за трап и вскочить на него меньше секунды, потом борт сухогруза летит вверх, а тримаран проваливается вниз и отскакивает в море», - рассказал капитан российского судна Станислав Березкин.
Тримаран зацепили буксирным канатом, но уже поздней ночью из-за неблагоприятных условий тримаран оторвало от сухогруза.
Когда русские моряки оказались на борту «Sounion», оказалось, что спасли их в том числе украинцы.
«Я почувствовал, что нахожусь там, где нет рас и национальностей, где тебе помогут независимо от того, на каком языке ты говоришь, какой у тебя цвет кожи и разрез глаз. В море все мы на одном расстоянии от Бога – на расстоянии вытянутой руки», – цитирует капитана Станислава Березкина.
Я бы добавил, что мы и на земле на одном расстоянии от Бога. Важно об этом не забывать.
