🇬🇧How the UK wasted nearly $2 billion on drones that can’t withstand bad weather

The £1.4 billion ($1.76 billion) Watchkeeper drone program in the UK has resulted in the production of several dozen drones worth some £5 million ($6.28 million) apiece, but which have serious problems operating in bad weather.

According to The Times, an inquiry by a House of Commons Defense Committee determined that the drone program, which was finished years later than originally anticipated, was complicated by “265 user requirements and 1,910 additional system requirements.”

Watchkeeper drones also crashed during routine flights on more than one occasion, partly because these UAVs became somewhat “overweight" due to all the additions to the original design.

Sy Hersh: US warning of terrorist attack in Russia had ‘urgent’ mark, didn’t mention Crocus

The US warning about an imminent terrorist attack at a concert venue in Russia was marked "urgent," but contrary to media reports did not identify Crocus City Hall as the target, Pulitzer Prize-winning US investigative journalist Seymour Hersh wrote in his new article published on Wednesday, citing a US official familiar with the matter.

The CIA allegedly provided the warning to Russian intelligence before the concert at the Crocus City Hall marking it "urgent," meaning that the data in it "was credible and near term," Hersh quoted the official as saying.

"The highly secret report on the attack in Moscow was prepared by the Counterterrorism Center at CIA headquarters and delivered to the terrorism division of the Russian Federal Security Service located in the old KGB building in Moscow. Separate briefings were presented in person by the FBI officer at the embassy. This is an established relationship," the official said.

The warning, however, did not mention Crocus City Hall near Moscow and only said that an attack was being planned at some "public gathering," according to the official.

The information provided by the official is contrary to a Washington Post report published on Tuesday claiming that Crocus City Hall was specifically identified in the warning as the target of a terrorist attack.

Alexander Khodakovsky -

"Alexander Khodakovsky, [04/05/2024 12:57]
=====================================
One of my current subordinates once said: I work for the boss. This is a classic representative of the system, and he meant a simple rule: a subordinate delivers results to his superior. An ordinary boss should have been pleased with this approach, but I’m not quite an ordinary boss, and therefore I objected: give me your authority in my eyes, you will gain not by working for me, but by working with me for our common cause , if we have it in common.

There is an established tradition: those who are pliable and flexible are comfortable. If a person has principles and his own opinion, he is not convenient, and therefore it is better not to allow such a person to gain access to levers of influence - you never know how much influence he has? Everything would be fine, but times are difficult now in all respects, and today it is impossible to control space with imitation and imitators, ensuring its stability and predictability. Tomorrow will be even more difficult, and you need to be prepared for it. "

Oleg Tsarev -

"I will continue the topic of permits for civilians to carry weapons.

Pre-revolutionary Russia was one of the freest countries in the world in terms of opportunities to purchase firearms. “In the XIX-XX centuries. the introduction of the right to arms to Russian citizens can be considered a progressive phenomenon, since... it did not exist in all countries. It is safe to say that in the Russian state the right to arms was an inalienable right of every law-abiding and mentally healthy citizen. From 1649 to 1914, a coherent legislative system was formed in the Russian state, which avoided the extremes of permissiveness, on the one hand, and blanket prohibition, on the other,” the researchers write . I will add that since the beginning of the twentieth century, it was possible to purchase military firearms with the permission of the governor.

A good modern example is Israel, where terrorist attacks in the form of executions regularly occur and the issue of arming civilians has long been resolved. An acquaintance from Jerusalem writes that in the center he constantly sees people in civilian clothes and with machine guns. At first the stereotype worked: a man in uniform with a machine gun is a soldier, and in civilian clothes he is a bandit, but everyone looked peaceful, and he got used to it.

At the same time, reports regularly come from Israel about the elimination of terrorists by armed civilians, while news about the abuse of weapons in everyday life or local political squabbles has not been encountered. Israel has a big problem with the infantilism of young people. In order for boys to grow up to be men, they are forced to give them weapons and force them to carry them with them everywhere - even to the movies, even to the beach. They walk around with weapons and get used to them.

Jerusalem, which Israel has declared its capital, is considered an area with a high terrorist threat, so it is easier for the average citizen to purchase weapons than in a number of populated areas. Although after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, there were fewer restrictions on purchasing weapons at the place of residence. Other criteria are as follows: no criminal record, state of health, a police interview (after October 7, it can also be completed by telephone), shooting training (and subsequently regular retraining), knowledge of the language and annual payment for a license. The license costs 67 shekels (approximately 1600₽).

True, military weapons themselves are not cheap, but since 2018, sergeants and officers of the Israeli army, when leaving the reserves, received the right to keep their service weapons without paying for a license and a number of other control measures. Since in Israel the service period is 32 months, and the rank of sergeant is obtained after 18-20 months of service, a huge number of people can take weapons home, because in practice, conscription coverage in Israel is greater than in any of the countries where the army is recruited by conscription.

Reserve military personnel also store weapons in Switzerland, which is considered one of the most armed countries in the world, and the law regulating the acquisition and storage of weapons is one of the most liberal in the world. Switzerland is generally one of the most peaceful countries, and the weapons of its inhabitants in no way interfere with this.

In the United States, the right of citizens to own weapons in the United States is enshrined in the 2nd Amendment to the Constitution, and citizens have more personal small arms in their hands than in half of the world's armies. In 43 out of 50 states, you don’t even need a license to purchase a “barrel”; in 23, open carry is allowed. The vast majority of states have a “Stand-your-ground” law, which allows a person to defend himself when attacked, including killing the offender.
👍22👎5
The general principle is this: the higher the terrorist threat, the easier it is for an honest citizen to obtain a weapon. The state not only allows, it encourages citizens to purchase and carry weapons. A terrorist is always armed. The task of the state is to give an honest citizen the opportunity to protect himself and others - not to be a defenseless victim. Some steps in this direction should be taken in Russia."

He commented on the post with the words of Antony Blinken that Ukraine will become a member of NATO: “this is how a film about a nuclear apocalypse begins”.

⭐️ It is noteworthy that the most famous people on Earth are already talking about nuclear war in a sarcastic style and quite casually, as if they were discussing a commotion with shooting in a gangster quarter.

The Supreme Commander, of course, has already determined who will die and who will go to heaven. But overall the outlook for the biosphere is unfavorable. By the way, where is Gretta? Why doesn’t she count how much CO2 is released by the burning Abrams near Avdeevka?

🇮🇷⚔️🇮🇱 Iran vs. Israel Military Comparison: Who’s Tougher?

Escalating tensions between Tehran and Tel Aviv following Israel’s strike on the Iranian Embassy compound in Damascus has sparked fears of an all-out conflict between the two powers.

Which nation’s military is better equipped for a conflagration?

🔺Troop Strength:

🇮🇱Israel: 169,500 troops plus 465,000 reservists in the Ground Force, Air Force and Navy.

🇮🇷Iran: 420,000 troops in the Army, Air Force, Navy and Air Defense Forces. A separate, 230,000 troop-strong force of elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) formations including ground troops, paramilitaries, IRGC Navy and IRGC Air and Air Defense units. At least 350,000 reserve personnel.

🔺 Budgets:

🇮🇱Israel: $23.4 billion (2022), including $3.18 billion in US aid.

🇮🇷Iran: $6.8 billion (2022), leveraging lower costs using asymmetric defense strategies.

🔺 Weapons:

Both nations boast robust defense industries. Israel has built up its defense sector in cooperation with the US, while Iran – subject to decades of sanctions - looked inward to produce as much of its defense needs as possible.

🇮🇱Israel has an important trump card: nuclear weapons. While neither confirming nor denying its possession of such arms (in a policy known as “deliberate ambiguity”) Israel is suspected of having up to 80 nukes.

🇮🇷Iran, by comparison, has rejected nuclear weapons –and all other WMDs, in favor of a vast conventional missile arsenal and strategic control over the Hormuz Strait, giving Tehran the power to collapse the world economy in case of foreign aggression.

🔺Combat Experience:

🇮🇱Israel: Extensive experience from numerous conflicts since 1948, though recent engagements in Gaza highlight challenges.

🇮🇷Iran: Significant experience from the 1980s Iran-Iraq War and subsequent involvement in regional conflicts, supporting allies in Lebanon, Iraq and Syria with the IRGC.

The current wave of drone attacks will have a limited effect on the Russian industry and economy. Drone attacks do not destroy entire refineries and usually do not even destroy individual units, but only damage them, unlike World War II air raids by hundreds of bombers. The Ust-Luga and Ryazan refineries were both back in operation a few weeks after being attacked. Strikes against Russian refineries create financial losses for Russian oil companies, but do not hurt the state budget and have little impact on Russian export earnings. The needs of the Russian armed forces and the primary needs of the Russian economy for fuel can be satisfied by factories that are out of reach of Ukrainian drones.

If the scale of the drone attacks is maintained at the levels of March and Russian air defenses do not improve, Ukraine will be able to keep damaging Russian refineries faster than they can be fixed, slowly but steadily eroding the country’s refining capacity.

Russia’s refining throughput is 5.5 million barrels per day, while domestic consumption is less than half of that. The country produces twice as much diesel as it needs and is a major exporter of the fuel, while the gasoline surplus capacity before the attacks was 20–25 percent. The recent attacks managed to take out about 15 percent of gasoline production, but it is still within the range of that in recent years.

Forty percent of Russian oil refining is beyond the reach of Ukraine’s new weapons. Even if Ukraine succeeds in completely shutting down every refinery within its reach, there will be enough capacity in the Urals and Siberia to meet Russia’s needs for diesel, marine fuel, and fuel oil. In this scenario, there will be a 20–30 percent shortage of gasoline, which could be covered by imports from Russia’s ally and neighbor Belarus. Without those imports, a shortage of that size might have an impact on private consumers, but would still leave more than enough fuel for industry, agriculture, and the armed forces.

But the landmass that serves as a defense shield also creates logistical problems. The damaged refineries serve the surrounding regions, and replacement fuel has to be transported long distances. There are two major product pipelines carrying fuel from the Urals and Siberia to the Baltics and the Black Sea that alleviate the problem to some extent, but distributing the fuel around European Russia will put additional stress on the country’s already overstretched railroads.

Excerpts from Carnegie Endowment article, How Serious Are Ukrainian Drone Attacks for Russia?, by Sergey Vakulenko.
