19 years ago today the US launched its invasion into Iraq.
In the opening hours of 'Operation Iraqi Freedom', an indiscriminate bombing campaign pummeled the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, as part of a strategy that was called 'Shock and Awe'.
A day prior, on March 19, 2003, George W. Bush began his address by telling the American people that the US was in the process of "disarming" and demilitarizing Iraq. The goal was to "limit Saddam Hussein's ability to wage war" and free the Iraqi people.
Some have pointed out similarities between America's Iraq war and the Russian 'special military operation' to highlight current US hypocrisy. Whatever one makes of such comparisons, it should prompt reflection among both Americans and Russians, something which most Americans failed to do in the wake of the 'Global War on Terror'.
America's legacy is clear. Today, US troops remain on the ground in a conflict-ridden Iraq, where some 268,000 - 295,000 people were killed between 2003 and 2018.

Into each life, a little rain must fall. We were very lucky. Of the garage complex of more than 120 garages in Petrovsky District, only one was damaged. And it belonged to Nikolai Vasilievich, Lyudmila's father and my father-in-law. Yes, his beloved VAZ 2101 sedan, the only car he ever owned, was completely destroyed, and the garage he bought for it was badly damaged by a 120mm shell from Ukrop artillery. It was a beautiful car in perfect condition...
But at least only material things were damaged. Nikolai and Lyudmila actually took shelter in this garage during heavy shelling in the summer of 2014. So while it's a heavy financial and personal blow, no one died, no blood was spilled, so thank God, after all.

В каждую жизнь должен выпасть небольшой дождь. Нам очень повезло. Из гаражного комплекса, насчитывающего более 120 гаражей в Петровском районе, пострадал только один. И он принадлежал Николаю Васильевичу, папе Людмилы и моему свекру. Да, его любимый Ваз 2101 седан, единственный автомобиль, который он когда-либо имел, был полностью уничтожен, а гараж, который он купил для него, был сильно поврежден 120-мм снарядом артиллерии Укропа. Это был прекрасный автомобиль в идеальном состоянии...
Но, по крайней мере, пострадали только материальные вещи. Николай и Людмила действительно укрывались в этом гараже во время сильных обстрелов летом 2014 года. Так что, хотя это и тяжелый финансовый и личный удар, никто не погиб, не пролилась кровь, так что слава Богу, в конце концов.

Petrovsky District yesterday March 21st, 3:00 PM. The shelling that hit my father in law's garage hit a residential street less than 200 meters away. A civilian was filming the hit on the garage when, BANG! Thank God no one was hit, and damage to houses was not too heavy.
Петровский район вчера 21 марта, 15:00. Обстрел, в результате которого пострадал гараж моего тестя, попал на жилую улицу, расположенную менее чем в 200 метрах от него. Гражданский снимал на камеру попадание в гараж, когда раздался БАНГ! Слава Богу, никто не пострадал, и повреждения домов были не слишком сильными.
