Maryinka 2023 - Minsk Highway 1942

Many years after the war, in 1958, a rifle cartridge was found 160km west of Moscow where fierce fighting during Moscow Counter Offensive had raged. It was all darkened after long time exposure to weather and wind. Within it lay a narrow strip of paper where, with fast, uneven writing, a Russian soldier's last words were written.

Many such last words of heroes of the Great Patriotic War have been found. They reach us like echoes from the past that travelled through time to sound in the hearts of children and grandchildren, of whom, many are now fighting the same inhuman barbarism.

On the 22nd of February 1942, Roman Rudakov's fellow soldier wrote:

12 of us were sent to the Minsk highway to block the way for the enemy, especially the enemy tanks. And we held our ground. Now there are only three of us left: Kolya, Volodya and me, Alexander. And the enemy is right on.

There fell one more - Volodya from Moscow. The tanks keep coming one after the other. There are already 19 burning tanks on the road. But there are only two of us. We will stand as long as our fighting powers last, but we will not let the fascists through until our own forces arrive.

And now, I am alone, wounded in the head and arm. And the tanks added to the count, already 23. I will probably die. But maybe someday someone will find my note and remember us. I am from Frunze, Russian. There are no parents. Goodbye, dear friends. Yours, Alexander Vinogradov. 22/2-1942

"We will stand for as long as our fighting powers last", Alexander wrote. And it did last back then, just as it does now.

What was it, what is it, in these soldiers, that prove tougher than armor and stronger than tanks.
We know, we recognise love. And we know, that the Motherland will hear the call of her children!

Roman, a young man from Bataysk born in 2001, wrote a message down with a marker on the brick of a dilapidated house in Maryinka. He was hiding there with a group of troopers. Nine in total, that was the number of bodies found there.

All these months — two years almost — our guys have been dying on the front, returning Russian cities. We've known this, some have resigned, some have stopped reading the news, protecting himself from emotions.

But, during the clean-up of Maryinka, a brick was found. And this brick shocked the deputy commander so much that he ordered it to be taken out of the wall and he has since then stored it next to the unit's banner.
The brick shocked not only the deputy political officer — it told us all the heavy story of the last minutes, maybe hours, of the surrounded assault group.

These are special moments — a purgatory in life. When the hope of salvation leaves a person, he knows, that he will inevitably die, but, he has someone to live for. He is strong in spirit and ready to accept leaving. But he's being held here, on Earth, by those in his care, those who will not cope without him. His mother, younger brother and sister. But there is no chance on this Earth. The enemy is about to come. Then, the person takes a marker and writes his request on a brick.

Strong in spirit, this Roman. In order to make such an inscription, it is necessary — while being in ambush, surrounded and facing the inevitable — to believe that ours will take Maryinka. It is necessary to believe in victory as the lack of faith in salvation peaks. Believe, that ours will come here, into this dilapidated building. That it will be our soldier who will notice this brick. Take it out, not pass by, but pass on the last will of the soldier. You have to be very strong to do this.

Later Roman's photos were found on his social networks. A young man with a serious, focused look. With the right look. Immediately it became clear that we needed such a person. That all the soldiers are very much needed.
Also, the report from the military enlistment office, where Roman, just demobilized from military service, already had a summons. He says, "Well, what to do? We need to protect our Motherland. It's either them or us. If no one protects now, they will be here already."
Very simple words. And the guys leaving for the SMO almost always say exactly the same: "Either them or us. Someone has to defend the Motherland."

We are used to hearing these words, so much so, that we do no longer feel their meaning. But the brick found in Maryinka took them and ripped them open.

Those last minutes of the trooper without hope. The humility, the desire not to leave, to stay here, for the sake of mom, brother and sister, rained down on us from the fractured words. The fear that no one will look after them. This fear for the loved ones, stronger than the fear of death.
This story is a heavy burden for the heart and soul. It became adamant for everyone that Roman's family be helped.

But there were nine of them! Everyone's family need help.

And although the state is now doing unprecedentedly effort to provide assistance to the families of fighters, after such stories, people — ordinary people, our fellow citizens, us — we still need to find solace.

How do we know that Roman believed before his death that help would be provided to his family? Then he would have left more calmly — and this calmness of his would have somehow comforted us. But how do we know for sure?

Solace is in that same brick. Roman would not have written on it if he didn't believe that ours would take the Maryinka, that our people would enter this house, look around — and that someone would notice the inscription, and the brick would reach the minister, and the minister would give the order to fulfill his last will.

And, since Roman from Bataysk believed in all this, it means that by leaving the inscription, he left consolation for us as well.

Red Sea Operation could cost US pretty penny

The Houthis have carried out 100 drone and missile attacks since October 7, as per the US Department of Defense.

The Yemeni militants are in possession of a sizable and relatively advanced arsenal of drones and rockets which are cheaper than the US interceptors used to shoot them down.

As per the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft:

▪️ US missiles reportedly used to shoot down Houthi projectiles and drones include: the SM-2 ($2.1 million); SM-6 ($4.3 million); ESSM Sea Sparrows ($1.7 million); and Rolling Airframe missile ($905,000);

▪️ US ships cannot reload in the Red Sea and will have to return to port if the kinetic activity goes on much longer, which also means additional costs.

The costs related to the US-led Red Sea op could become much higher if Washington engages in an all-out war against the Houthis while sending military aid to Ukraine and Israel at the same time.
