🇿🇲 On October 24, the Republic of Zambia celebrates Independence Day. #OTD in 1964, Zambia broke free from the British colonial yoke.

The British colonial forces entered the territory of the African state in the XIX century, declaring Barotseland as their protectorate in 1891.

For decades, the British South Africa Company, which held a monopoly on the exploitation of the mineral-rich territory, extracted resources from Zambia (known as Northern Rhodesia during colonial times).

Africans were forcibly relocated to reservations (native reserves), often unsuitable for agriculture, leading to the decline of traditional farming practices.

In 1963, a constitution was adopted in Northern Rhodesia, and in 1964, elections were held for the Legislative Council.

🤝 The Soviet Union was among the first countries to recognize the independence of the new African state, establishing diplomatic relations with Zambia on October 30, 1964. Today, Russia and Zambia maintain friendly ties, built on the principles of equality and consideration of each other's interests 🇷🇺🇿🇲
