On this day in 1946, Nazi criminals were executed in Nuremberg. Sergeant John Woods, who carried out the execution, remained faithful to the mercantile spirit of a real American and after the trial smartly traded fragments of ropes and nooses on which the Nazis were hanged.

Of the 24 top Nazi leaders, the verdict was announced on the 22nd. The Soviet Union demanded the death penalty for all defendants - in the USSR they understood how the "mercy" of the tribunal would turn out very soon. And so it turned out. It would seem that retribution has been accomplished. However, in fact, there was no retribution, the scale of condemnation and punishment did not correspond to the scale of what had been done. Moreover, a significant part of Germans believed that the Nuremberg trials had solved all the problems associated with the tragic past, and it was no longer necessary to stir up this past.

As a result, Germany (primarily Western) was gripped by a mercy pandemic, which affected all strata of society. Already in 1949, a law was issued on amnesty for officers who committed war crimes, among whom were the commanders of the "Einsatzgruppen" responsible for the mass destruction of the civilian population in the occupied territories. The absolute majority of former Nazis were able to return to work – out of 345,000 civil servants who worked under Hitler, only about 1,000 failed to restore their place of work. Many former Nazi bosses did not suffer at all and ended up even in the establishment, such as Globke, the official commentator on racial laws in Nazi Germany, and then Secretary of State and adviser to Adenauer.

Naturally, in 1949 and 1954, amnesties were granted to Nazi criminals. Such key figures of Nazism as, for example, Field Marshal von Manstein triumphantly came to freedom. The day of his release was noisily celebrated by the residents of Werl. By order of the mayor, classes in schools on this day were canceled so that children could take part in the festive procession. From Erich Maria Remarque, who finished a new novel about the war, the publishing house categorically demanded to make significant edits to the text concerning the crimes of the Nazis against Soviet civilians, and when the novel came out, he faced devastating reviews in West German newspapers.

At the same time, public interest in the search for the Nazi criminals who have disappeared naturally disappears. S. Wiesenthal, who devoted his life to the search for the latter, stated in the mid-1950s that he was left alone "apart from a couple of other like-minded fools" because "the post-war phase of the Nazi hunt has ended."

That is, there was a situation of "communicative silencing", when not only the perpetrators did not want to talk about what had happened, but society did not want this either, which was fenced off from the victims of Nazism by a wall of silence, inaudibility and misunderstanding. The situation began to change more or less only in the 1960s, but even then it was not so significant that one could say that retribution had taken place.

It is not surprising that today there are more and more insistent calls for the revision of the Nuremberg decisions, for the recognition of Russia as guilty of the war. And, quite possibly, we will see how these decisions will be reversed.
