Today we remember Paulo Paulino Guajajara, shot #OnThisDay in 2019 by illegal loggers - a reminder of how things have been under Bolsonaro…

“It makes me so mad to see this! These people think they can come here, into our home, and help themselves to our forest? No. We won’t allow it.”

The Amazon Guardians are in a constant struggle to evict illegal loggers who destroy their territory - which is also home to the uncontacted Awá. Paulo and other guardians like Janildo in September 2022 have given their lives for this struggle: their spirits live on and the Guardians won’t stop fighting.

Great news from India!

Adivasi activist Hidme Markam has been released from prison after nearly 2 years - the courts have found that the police had no evidence that she’d been involved in the terrorism they’d accused her of.

Adivasi (Indigenous) people in India are being heavily targeted by the authorities and police for fighting for their rights and to protect their lands. Hidme is one example of many unlawful arrests.

At Survival, we have been busy publicising the disastrous health crisis unfolding in the Yanomami’s territory in Brazil.

Alongside Indigenous organizations, we’ve been pushing for the removal of more than 20,000 illegal gold miners from Yanomami lands - an invasion that’s increased dramatically since former President Bolsonaro took office in 2019.

The gold miners are destroying Yanomami and Ye’kwana livelihoods, spreading disease, killing, raping and terrorizing communities - and they’re now just a few miles away from uncontacted Yanomami.

🚨 It’s vital that all illegal invaders are removed from Yanomami lands and that they’re properly protected. This illegal gold rush must stop and those who profit from it should be prosecuted.

But “Indigenous people’s determination to defend their territories against these threats has shone brighter than ever.”

Survival’s Sarah Shenker writes on what it’s been like to fight for Indigenous rights in Brazil with Bolsonaro in power, and looks forward to the new opportunities Lula’s presidency may bring: https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/brazil-indigenous-peoples-bolsonaro-lula/
⚠️ Urgent action needed to support Peru’s #UncontactedTribes.

The Peruvian Congress is debating a new bill which aims to:
• Make it possible to revoke already-established Indigenous reserves for uncontacted and recently-contacted tribes.
• Open the territories of uncontacted tribes to oil and gas drilling, logging and mining.
• Block the creation of desperately-needed reserves for uncontacted tribes whose territories currently have no protection.

If it comes into law it will be a disaster. It’s so serious Indigenous orgs in Peru have called it “The Genocide Bill.”

Please act now - tell the authorities to scrap this bill: https://svlint.org/GenocidalBill

Did you hear that Tesla, plus French & German companies, are all linked to massive nickel mining plans in Indonesia? On one island (Halmahera), a unique uncontacted tribe - the Hongana Manyawa - will be wiped out unless the mining’s stopped.

Please take action! It’s urgent 👉svlint.org/IndonesiaAct

It’s #IndigenousPeoplesDay today - a great time to get involved in our campaigns: survivalinternational.org/getinvolved/emails

Also, another update: the #AmazonSummit is underway. It’s bringing together political representatives of the countries of the Amazon Basin plus guests to debate issues to do with the region. Bushe Matis, Coordinator of Indigenous organizations (UNIVAJA), told us ahead of the summit: “Uncontacted tribes live and survive self-sufficiently, so we, and governments, need to protect their territories from outsiders. Governments need to set aside a budget and get to work. It’s no use them having discussions and then not doing anything in practice. We say no more illegal mining! No more environmental crimes! No more violence against Indigenous people! Everyone must look to the Amazon with great care. We’re bringing these demands to the world during this #AmazonSummit."

Did you know that the resources of uncontacted peoples are being stolen and sold around the globe to make stuff for everyone else? And it’s taking its toll on uncontacted peoples - if we don’t stop plundering and destroying their lands, within 10 years half of them could be wiped out. The threats cannot be underestimated. Take action to stop this now: https://svlint.org/ActTG

Today in 1969, the UK’s Sunday Times shocked the world with Norman Lewis’s article “Genocide.”
Lewis had visited Brazil in 1968, and his article exposed the genocide being committed against its Indigenous people. Thousands of them in the Amazon were annihilated on their own land for commercial interests – from rubber extraction to mining and road construction. Many others were forced off their lands, enslaved, sexually abused, and more.
This horrifying account outraged a small group of people who were determined to do something about it – from their first discussions, Survival International was born.
In its early years, Survival operated through volunteers and with virtually no resources, raising awareness of the struggles Indigenous peoples were engaged in, supporting community projects, and campaigning for Indigenous rights at international forums such as the UN.
Since then, thousands of supporters around the world have joined the struggle, making Survival a truly global movement, and working tirelessly to prevent further genocides.
In the last 57 years, our movement has achieved hundreds of victories and helped bring about a radical change in public opinion. We’re eternally grateful to you for being part of our movement.
