Since 1959, the 7th Military Transport Air Division, created on the basis of the 25th Guards Air Transport Regiment, was based in Melitopol. The regiment appeared during the Battle of Moscow in 1941, as a night bomber unit, and after it grew into a transport regiment. The 7th Division was one of the most modern in the USSR and was one of the first to receive the IL-76. This division carried out the full complement of Soviet troops in Afghanistan, performed specific tasks in Africa and other parts of the world. In particular, this division had fifty IL-76s.
Since 1992, when Ukraine got this burden, the division has been plundered by both the government and the local population. At any Melitopol iron market you could buy instruments and parts of IL-76, of which Ukraine got about two hundred. Also airplanes of the division performed commercial flights in Africa, where they were lost in the 90's due to sloppiness and degradation of service.
