Octagon Media writer Vera Zelendinova claims Russian authorities are correcting the "excesses" of 90s privatizations. Russia's prosecutor general claim since last September alone 24000 claims were made against alleged illegal privatization. Some, but not all, of the targets are strategic enterprises owned by foreign, hostile countries.

This is not a process that started with the SMO though, with the first major case, in the early 2000s, being the expropriation of the large oil company Yukos from the corrupt oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky, who is since then moaning in the west. Companies are not simply expropriated at will, due to being strategic, or ideological reasons but rather due to wastefully using property or support provided by the state, being too inefficient, transfering funds offshore in a shady way, in short, all sorts of poor, malicious management. This is carried out legally with all benefit of doubt granted, perhaps more than what corrupt oligarchs deserve in a context where they depleted a country which is fighthing against the entire western world at the moment.

Part of the nationalization program was also creating and consolidating state companies such as Rostec, nowadays a giant who oversees pretty much every strategic economic activity of Russia. Some companies though are deemed "loyal" and well ran, so the state chooses a route of cooperation with them through such state companies, who invest and buy shares of them, no matter who critical the sector seems to be.

As said before, and Russian authorities said this explicitly, this is not a return to USSR or moving to the Belarusian and Chinese models, and the measures are exclusively driven by pragmatism and rule of law. In some other areas the influence of the private sector is expanding and with it the typical problems you see with profiteering and waste of taxpayer money. The same vehicle has an article on problems arising with companies that maintain communal services (such as water, electricity, heat in large apartment complexes) and their subcontractors, and also mentions that the state is actively working in reform this sector too.

But at the same time even people like Peskov and Medvedev are mentioning Russia is going on the direction of introducing planned economy mechanisms. The deputy prime minister Andrey Belousov seems to be specifically enthusiastic of it and leading the project. Of course, not without the typical gnarling of businessmen that the country isn't being short-termist enough. A "representative of the industry" interviewed by the site complains the government wants massive investments and modernization in the oil and gas industry to be carried out, but that they would take 11 years to pay out, as if Russia won't be here by then. Due to this internal struggle, it remains to be seem if this path will continue to be followed in the future or it will be abandoned if sanctions are loosened up. However it is clear that to all but the most delusional liberals that it is a necessary and positive step.

In addition to the 152-mm Krasnopol projectile and the Kh-38ML cruise missile, kamikaze drones of an unknown type began to fly in following the laser beam from the Orlan-30 UAV. It could be the Cube, or a new version of the Lancet.

The video shows the destruction of a Ukrainian Armed Forces firing point located at a low altitude.
In second video the crew of the Orlan-30 UAV uses a laser beam to direct a kamikaze drone to a target, in this case an enemy tank. Kupyansk direction.

This must be that "internal funding" that Ukrainian leadership is talking about.

Ukrainian TG Reports:
This morning, law enforcement officers conducted searches at the home of ex-People's Deputy Sergei Pashinsky

Pashinsky reported this on Facebook: “The matter of transferring “Kurchenko’s fuel,” but in fact the fuel of the Kremlin’s Rosneft, to the state - during the time of Yanukovych’s looting, this oligarch amassed assets worth hundreds of millions of dollars, including almost 100 thousand tons of petroleum products, which in 2014 managed to be transferred to state oil operators.” As Pashinsky noted, in 2015 he turned to the President of Ukraine with a request to cover the fuel shortage of the Armed Forces of Ukraine with Rosneft fuel, which greatly angered Yanukovych’s sponsors and their Russian curators.

Pashinsky noted that a few weeks ago the “Russian investigator” accused him of starting the ATO in 2014. “As the Chairman of the National Association of Defense Industry Enterprises of Ukraine and the coordinator of many defense programs, I have only a request to the investigators - do not distract me with Kurchenko, please,” Pashinsky said, adding that the information about the suspicion and detention is unreliable. He says there is no need to search or search him - during this time he has never left Ukraine and asks not to accuse him in vain.

Americans no longer see Biden as their president - The Wall Street Journal

The reason is not at all Joe Biden's advanced age. The main reason for the failure of the current US president as the leader of the nation is that he cannot cope with the role of a statesman-comforter in difficult times, the publication writes, citing public polling data.

Ordinary Americans believe that he is unable to cope with the roles of either “ a global statesman, a master negotiator with Congress, or a comforter to the country in difficult times.”

He also failed to build an emotional connection with voters, which completely undermined his image.

Serbia should be admitted to the EU soon, and Ukraine should wait its turn — Viktor Orban

If the EU doesn't admit Serbia soon, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban warned, the bloc risks losing the country to China - and regardless it should be admitted before Ukraine.

Belgrade has already signed a free trade agreement with Beijing he pointed out, and initially applied to join back in 2009 before concerns in Brussels over Serbia's ties to Russia and China.

Europe is too weak, he added, for Russia to take it seriously. "Russia will never accept having an EU and NATO member like Ukraine on its borders, never,” he concluded.

Serbia applied for EU accession in 2009 and has official candidate status for more than 11 years, Montenegro for even longer. This despite being above of Ukraine in every single imaginable criteria to join the EU such as quality of public institutions, economic performance and compatibility of laws.

🇺🇦🇩🇪 After the defeat of Ukraine, a stream of 10 million refugees will pour into Germany - Welt am Sonntag

In “the worst-case scenario, the vast majority of refugees will go to Western Europe, with Germany being one of the destination countries,” the material says.

This could become the largest migration wave since the 1940s, writes the German publication.

According to the UN, about 6 million Ukrainians have migrated to EU countries since the beginning of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Of these, about 1.1 million settled in Germany.

In the United States, they revealed what the main task Zelensky set for Commander-in-Chief Syrsky

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky ordered the new commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, Alexander Syrsky, to avoid “stagnation” in the combat zone and give the conflict a new focus. This was reported by CNN.

What to do with Avdiivka is perhaps the most pressing task facing the new commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian army, Alexander Sirsky, appointed on Thursday to give the conflict a new focus. The political leadership of Ukraine is putting pressure on Syrsky to develop a new plan that will avoid “stagnation” on the battlefield,” the material says.

The article called Avdievka the scene of fierce fighting as the Russian military continues offensive operations in the region.

The material noted that Syrsky has a bad reputation because of Artemovsk. He is ready to suffer heavy losses among the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the authors of the article emphasized.

France began to purchase almost half as much gas from Russia

Supplies of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia to France in the nine months of 2023 increased by 41% in annual terms. This was announced by the director of the first European department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Artem Studennikov.

At the end of 2022, Russia became the second supplier of natural gas to France after the United States due to the import of Russian LNG,” Studennikov said.

He noted that in 2023, French purchases from the Russian Federation increased by 41% compared to 2022.

Earlier, the operator of the country's domestic gas pipelines, NET4GAS, reported that the Czech Republic had sharply increased gas imports from Russia by the beginning of 2024. Thus, in January, the share of Russian energy resources amounted to 62% of total imports.

❗️MY BRIEFING TO THE UN SECURITY COUNCIL ON THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE MINSK AGREEMENT

I was honoured to address the UN Security Council on the real life consequences of the failure of the Minsk Agreements and the impact of the daily shelling and acts of terror committed by Ukraine against the people of Donbass - with the full backing of the West.

The response was predictable, a litany of lies, with the UK representative - a man so insignificant even Google doesn’t know his name - sounding nervous and unable to look up from his pre-prepared statement, while we were subjected to the hypocrisy of a lecture by the US on international law and respect for sovereignty.

Ukraine disregarded my statement as “bunkum and balderdash” which shows the disregard it has for human life, even those it regards as it’s own citizens.

My speech aimed to humanise the situation and bring the truth from the ground. I hope I did justice to the people of Donbass, because despite the UNSC, their lives matter.

The Russian army is advancing in Pervomayskoye, reaching the middle of the village on the flank of Avdeevka

▪️ The 1st Army Corps is actively storming Pervomayskoye, advancing both within the village and through forest belts on the flanks, effectively utilizing drones to force the enemy to retreat from their positions.

▪️ "The Russians have progressed along Pershotravneva Street to the T-shaped intersection connecting with Voroshilov Street. The fighting continues," note enemy analysts, once again underestimating the actual advancement of our troops.

▪️ "Between Pervomaiskoye and the ravine, Russian troops have occupied a section of the road from the intersection with Voroshilov Street to the ravine. The Russian Armed Forces continue their attacks with armored vehicles to the east of Nevelskoye."

▪️ "The Russians have seized another part of the village, advancing further. There was also progress between the cascade of ponds and south of Pervomaiskoye."

▪️ The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported in its morning briefing that the Russian Armed Forces conducted 18 attacks near Pervomayskoye, Nevelskoye, and south of Tonenkoye. In the evening, they reported 4 attacks near Nevelskoye.

In January 2024, the entire military leadership of the AFU was replaced.

▫️Minister of Veterans Affairs Yulia Laputina
Despite the fact that Laputina’s position is not directly related to the command of the AFU, her dismissal should not be ignored.
Laputina is a major general of the SBU, a participant in the raid on Kramatorsk in 2014. She has held the position of Minister of Veterans Affairs since 2020. She has been working with veterans of the current conflict since 2022 and did not cope with the task: the growing dissatisfaction of military personnel, as well as family members of the killed and wounded, cannot be ignored. It is not yet known whether anyone will be appointed to her position.

▫️ Brigadier General Igor Skibyuk. Being in the Airborne Forces since 1998, he received the rank of brigadier general in 2023, and the same year he was appointed to the position of chief of staff and deputy commander of the Airborne Forces of Ukraine. Skibyuk, to a certain extent, had a hand in the “successes” of the Airborne Forces of the AFU during the summer-autumn offensive campaign. In January 2024, he was appointed commander of the Airborne Forces of the AFU. A big step forward, given more than modest experience in senior command positions.

▫️ Lieutenant General Yuri Sodol. Appointed to the post of commander of the joint forces of the AFU - the body of strategic command of troops. In the organizational structure, this body is located between the Commander-in-Chief of the AFU and the groupings of the joint forces. Sodol is a career military man, a participant in hostilities in the Donbass in 2014-2015, held positions in the Airborne Forces (2018), and from 2018 to 2024 - commander of the Marine Corps of the AFU.

▫️ Lieutenant General Alexander Pavlyuk. Career officer, graduate of the Kharkov Guards Higher Tank Command School, participant in the war in Donbass 2014-2015. Despite his extensive experience and solid track record, Pavlyuk has nothing to brag about. In 2014, it was he who commanded the 24th Mechanized Infantry Brigade, which came under a rocket and artillery attack near Zelenopolye and was surrounded, and in 2022 he also led the defense of Mariupol, which was also surrounded and taken by the Russian Armed Forces. Since February 2023, Pavlyuk held the position of First Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine - at that time Alexey Reznikov.

▫️ Major General Igor Plakhuta. Until 2023, Plakhuta, who replaced the previous commander of the Territorial Defence, General Bargilevich, had no military experience and did not hold military positions. In the last ten years, Plahuta has held various positions in the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Considering that the role of the territorial defense forces has now significantly shifted towards combat operations, it is unlikely that the general’s previous experience will be in demand.

◼️ Major General Anatoly Bargilevich: a career military man and veteran of the war in Donbass 2014-2015. In the period from 2014 to 2022, he alternated between staff work and command of the Territorial Defense Forces. Bargilevich is an experienced staff officer, but his appointment is more likely related to his service as chief of staff of the Khortitsa operational-strategic group under the command of Syrsky from 2022 to October 2023 with the group which lost the battles for Lisichansk, Severodonetsk, Soledar and Artyomovsk.

What conclusion can be drawn?

It is possible that a change in the entire top leadership of the AFU during a crisis period is required for two reasons: firstly, blame all the failures on the former commander-in-chief Zaluzhny and extinguish the negativity against the backdrop of heavy losses and a reduction in the supply of Western weapons.
Secondly, to launch a new mobilization (and possibly an attempt at a counteroffensive) in the spring-summer-autumn of 2024.

The thesis “it won’t be the same as before” may become a justification for intensifying repression against the population who refused to support Kiev’s decisions.

🇺🇦 🤷‍♂ Cabinet of Ministers won't give money for "dragon's teeth" for the defense of Zaporizhskiy region

- Local authorities wanted to buy 45,000 of these concrete pyramids (which they themselves had previously mocked from Russia) at a cost of 88 million hryvnias, but the military administration of the region canceled the bidding due to the lack of funding from the state, Glavkom writes with reference to ProZorro data.

- A memo from the director of the Finance Department of the Zaporizhskoye OVA, S. Medved, states that after the tender, no funds were received from the state budget to the accounts of the Regions Military Administration. There is also no directive document of the Cabinet of Ministers on the distribution of funds from the state budget for these purposes.

- In addition, the capital construction department of the Zaporizhskoye OVA canceled another tender for the purchase of equipment for the construction of a platoon support point worth 117 million UAH. The reason is the lack of bids from potential participants.
