By the collapse of the USSR, the population of Ukraine was about 50 million people. Even if we take out all land Russia acquired and its population (around 7/8 million) it remains something of around 35 million people, give or take. If 10 million people escaped to the Eu countries, that would be felt hard, so, Imao, perhaps 2, max 3 million escaped. Regarding pensioners, with that assessment, I must agree, because of the aging population of Ukraine. So, more like around 20 million people, in the span from children to working age population is still present. Some circumstantial evidence works towards this assumption, for example, that research about how many people each Ukrainian knows fell as a casualty of SMO. If we assume that the number of Kia is 380.000, that stick to about 1% of the population, more or less, which is way realistic. But, hey, they got their money for research. Who am I to contradict?
