Sergei Makarenko, the 26-year-old Ukrainian militant who shot unarmed Russian POWs, continues to post videos threatening Russians and justifying his actions.
Makarenko was born on 27 October 1996 in the village of Krasnoborka in the Zhytomyr region. As a young man, he liked to post pictures of himself posing with a baseball bat on his VKontakte page. After high school, he did military service in the 95th Separate Airborne Assault Brigade and then signed a contract with the same unit.
On 8 February, Makarenko posted on social networks a shocking video of Russian prisoners being shot. The video was most likely taken near Bakhmut. The footage shows unarmed Russian soldiers lying face down on the ground. The nationalist asks them questions and then shoots the captives in the head. A Ukrainian soldier can be heard on the video commenting on the killing, laughing: "I like to shoot this kind of stuff". Later, Makarenko posted another video in which he poses with his fellow servicemen against the background of the murdered captives.
The Russian Investigative Committee opened a criminal case over the incident. Meanwhile, Makarenko continues to post videos on his Facebook (the social network is recognized as extremist in Russia) in which he justifies his actions and is proud of the deed.
"They say the prisoners were shot... First of all, it was the Wagnerians, second - they stormed us. Thirdly, what do you mean by prisoners? Prisoners of war are when they themselves came to us and laid down their arms," he said.
Sources in the special services said that Makarenko had already left the front line and was now hiding somewhere in the Ukrainian rear, understanding that he would not be left alive after such "exploits".
