Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has said weapons from Ukraine are now entering the Lake Chad Basin region.

In his opening remarks at the 16th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Lake Chad Basin Commission, held at the conference hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Buhari, who also chairs the summit, said the situation, which has increased the spread of small arms and light weapons, requires the revival of border security in the region.

The situation in the Sahel and the conflict in Ukraine serve as major sources of arms and fighters joining the ranks of terrorists in the Lake Chad region. Much of the weapons and ammunition procured for the war in Libya continue to flow into the Lake Chad region and other parts of the Sahel. Weapons supplied to Ukraine are also beginning to make their way into the region.

"This illegal movement of weapons into the region has increased the proliferation of small arms and light weapons that continue to threaten our collective peace and security in the region," Buhari stressed.
