وَ لَقَدْ کُنَّا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلّی اللّهُ عَلَیهِ وَ آلِه نَقْتُلُ آبَاءَنَا وَ اءَبْنَاءَنَا وَ إِخْوَانَنَا وَ اءَعْمَامَنَا مَا یَزِیدُنَا ذَلِکَ إِلا إِیمَانا وَ تَسْلِیما وَ مُضِیّا عَلَی اللَّقَمِ وَ صَبْرا عَلَی مَضَضِ الْاءَلَمِ وَ جِدّا فِی جِهَادِ الْعَدُوِّ وَ لَقَدْ کَانَ الرَّجُلُ مِنَّا وَ الْآخَرُ مِنْ عَدُوِّنَا یَتَصَاوَلاَنِ تَصَاوُلَ الْفَحْلَیْنِ یَتَخَالَسَانِ اءَنْفُسَهُمَا اءَیُّهُمَا یَسْقِی صَاحِبَهُ کَأْسَ الْمَنُونِ فَمَرَّةً لَنَا مِنْ عَدُوِّنَا وَ مَرَّةً لِعَدُوِّنَا مِنَّا.
فَلَمَّا رَاءَی اللَّهُ صِدْقَنَا اءَنْزَلَ بِعَدُوِّنَا الْکَبْتَ وَ اءَنْزَلَ عَلَیْنَا النَّصْرَ حَتَّی اسْتَقَرَّ الْإِسْلاَمُ مُلْقِیا جِرَانَهُ وَ مُتَبَوِّئا اءَوْطَانَهُ، وَ لَعَمْرِی لَوْ کُنَّا نَأْتِی مَا اءَتَیْتُمْ مَا قَامَ لِلدِّینِ عَمُودٌ وَ لاَ اخْضَرَّ لِلْإِیمَانِ عُودٌ وَ ایْمُ اللَّهِ لَتَحْتَلِبُنَّهَا دَما وَ لَتُتْبِعُنَّهَا نَدَما.

در رکاب پیامبر خدا صلی الله
علیه و آله بودیم و با پدران و فرزندان و برادران و عمو‌های خود جنگ می‌کردیم، که این مبارزه بر ایمان و تسلیم ما می‌افزود، و ما را در جاده وسیع حق و صبر و بردباری برابر ناگواری‌ها و جهاد و کوشش برابر دشمن، ثابت قدم می‌ساخت.
گاهی یک نفر از ما و دیگری از دشمنان ما، مانند دو پهلوان نبرد می‌کردند، و هر کدام می‌خواست کار دیگری را بسازد و جام مرگ را به دیگری بنوشاند، گاهی ما بر دشمن پیروز می‌شدیم و زمانی دشمن بر ما غلبه می‌کرد.
پس آنگاه که خدا، راستی و اخلاص ما را دید، خواری و ذلت را بر دشمنان ما نازل و پیروزی را به ما عنایت فرمود:، تا آنجا که اسلام استحکام یافته فراگیر شد و در سرزمین‌های پهناوری نفوذ کرد.

We used to fight alongside the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), slaying our own fathers, sons, brothers, and paternal uncles; yet this served only to increase our faith, our submission, our steadfastness upon the clear path, our endurance of agonizing pain, and our zeal in striving against the enemy. A man from our ranks and another from the enemy would clash like two mighty stallions, each seeking to snatch the other’s life and force him to drink the cup of death; sometimes the victory was ours over the enemy, and at other times, it was the enemy’s over us.
When Allah saw our sincerity, He brought humiliation upon our enemy and bestowed victory upon us, until Islam became firmly established, having settled securely and taken deep root. By my life, had we acted as you have, no pillar of the faith would have stood, nor would the branch of faith have flourished. By Allah, you shall surely milk it [the situation] and yield blood, and you shall inevitably reap deep regret.
