- The U.S. ultimately plans to release 172 million barrels from the SPR, with roughly 39 million barrels still left to go under the current program. The oil is being loaned to companies, which must later return it with additional barrels.
- The Energy Department says the reserve can physically operate with as little as 70 million barrels remaining. But Texas A&M petroleum engineering professor Siddharth Misra told Reuters the practical minimum is closer to 250 million barrels, warning that falling below that level puts the aging storage system in a โdangerous zone.โ
