Iran is reshaping its military leadership, with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei appointing six senior military and security figures as Tehran shifts towards a more “offensive doctrine”. IRGC General Mohammad Reza Naqdi said the new approach would move Iran away from a primarily defensive posture towards faster decision-making, unified command and direct action against perceived enemies.

Among the key appointments, Ahmad Vahidi was named commander-in-chief of the IRGC and ordered to carry out “powerful offensive operations against the enemy”. Mohsen Rezaei, a former IRGC commander who supports Iran’s position over the Strait of Hormuz, was appointed head of the Supreme National Security Council, potentially strengthening the influence of hardliners who favour continuing confrontation with the US.

The reshuffle also strengthens Iran’s internal security apparatus, with Hossein Taeb returning as head of the Basij paramilitary force. The appointments come as Iran faces continued military pressure, economic difficulties and internal dissent, while the new leadership is described as taking a harder line on the war, the Strait of Hormuz and Iran’s nuclear programme.

A credible and imminent threat that President Donald Trump’s Air Force One could be targeted by a shoulder-fired missile prompted the Secret Service to secretly move him onto a smaller C-32A government jet during his departure from Turkey last month, according to a source briefed on the matter.

Trump and a small group of aides were moved from Air Force One to the smaller aircraft using a catering truck in a last-minute operation designed to conceal his movements. Air Force One then departed separately carrying Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, White House staff and the 13-member travelling press pool, while Trump flew to Britain without incident.

A second source said there was no clear operational plan to attack Trump, but there was an identified intent, which allowed both aircraft to fly. The threat may have involved a heat-seeking missile capable of targeting aircraft engines without emitting detectable radio signals, according to a defence expert.

U.S. intelligence officials were skeptical of the Iranian assassination threat against President Trump that was provided by Israel to the CIA and prompted his secret departure from Ankara, Türkiye, last month.

The intelligence was described as “Israeli-derived” and “low confidence,” with CIA analysts finding it unconvincing. Some U.S. officials also believed Israel may have shared the warning partly to influence Trump’s regional policy and his growing ties with Türkiye.

Despite those doubts, the Secret Service took no chances, secretly transferring Trump from Air Force One by catering truck to a C-32A, which flew him to Britain under F-16 escort.
