According to current and former officials cited by The WP, U.S. intelligence assessments paint a pessimistic picture of the prospects for additional American military strikes against Iran, suggesting they are unlikely to significantly alter Iran's negotiating posture or force major concessions from Tehran.
Intelligence analysts reportedly describe the current U.S.-Iran relationship as an undefined standoff โ not quite war, not quite peace โ a characterization made more troubling by the escalating pattern of violence between the two countries.
Any expansion of U.S. military operations would also face practical constraints, officials said, citing shrinking stockpiles of air-defense systems and long-range munitions, along with limits on the military's ability to move additional troops and aircraft into the region due to accumulated battle damage.
One official, speaking anonymously because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, was more blunt about the risk:
"We do not have enough to safely sustain operations, and I don't think the White House is aware of that."
