A STORY OF COURAGE

On September 11, 2001, passengers aboard a hijacked airplane realized what was happening — and decided they were not going to sit quietly and wait.

United Flight 93 was about 46 minutes out of Newark when hijackers seized the cockpit and turned the aircraft toward Washington, D.C. Everyone was ordered to remain seated and stay quiet.

Instead, the passengers picked up the phones.

Tom Burnett, 38, called his wife. She told him about the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.

"It's a suicide mission," he realized.

Minutes later, he called again with a chilling promise:

"Don't worry, we're going to do something."

Jeremy Glick, 31, a former collegiate judo champion, called his wife. Passengers were discussing their options and taking a vote.

"We're going to rush the hijackers."

He even joked that he still had his butter knife from breakfast. His wife told him: "You need to do it."

Mark Bingham, 31, a 6-foot-4 rugby player, reached his mother.

"You believe me, don't you, Mom?"

Todd Beamer, 32, a father whose third child was on the way, remained connected with a phone operator.

"I'm going to have to go out on faith. I don't have much of a choice."

And they weren't alone.

Passengers and crew made dozens of calls from Flight 93, learning what had happened elsewhere and realizing their aircraft could be part of the same coordinated attack. One flight attendant reportedly prepared boiling water to use against the hijackers.

No one survived to tell exactly who did what. But phone records, conversations with families and the cockpit recording revealed how a plan to fight back took shape.

At 9:57 a.m., the counterattack began.

The operator speaking with Beamer heard him turn away from the phone.

"Let's roll."

The cockpit recorder captured the struggle as passengers attempted to force their way forward. A food cart was used against the cockpit door while voices demanded they get inside.

The hijackers violently maneuvered the aircraft in an attempt to stop them.

At 10:03 a.m., Flight 93 crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

All 40 passengers and crew aboard were killed.

The aircraft was only about 20 minutes from Washington.

Of the four planes hijacked that morning, Flight 93 was the only one that never reached its intended target — because the people aboard decided to fight back.

On September 11, 2001, Peter Negron and Carlos da Costa were working for the Port Authority on the 88th floor of the North Tower when Flight 11 struck above them. Instead of immediately leaving, they joined Frank De Martini and Pablo Ortiz, grabbed tools, and began searching damaged floors for people trapped behind jammed doors, blocked corridors, and elevators. The men forced openings, cleared debris, and helped guide dozens of workers toward functioning stairwells. Accounts credit the group with helping at least 50 people escape before continuing upward to look for more survivors. Negron and da Costa never made it out. Their knowledge of the building, combined with ordinary tools and extraordinary determination, turned four office workers into rescuers when every minute mattered.
