⚓️ On Russia’s Navy Day, President of Russia, the Supreme Commander-in-Chief Vladimir Putin reviewed the Main Naval Parade held in St Petersburg.

The President, accompanied by Defence Minister Andrei Belousov and Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy Alexander Moiseyev, sailed aboard the naval motorboat Raptor to review the parade line of warships on the Neva River roadstead. Vladimir Putin greeted and congratulated their crews on their special day.

The vessels that took part in the review included:

🇷🇺 the battleship Poltava, the small missile ships Serpukhov and Odintsovo, the corvette Boiky, the ice-class patrol ship Ivan Papanin, the submarine Mozhaisk,

🇨🇳 the destroyer Jiaozuo of the Chinese Navy,

🇩🇿 the training ship La Soummam of the Algerian Navy,

🇮🇳 the frigate Tabar of the Indian Navy.

In total, 20 surface ships and boats, one submarine, four sailing vessels, and more than 2,500 military personnel took part in this year’s parade.

#NavyDay is celebrated in Russia on the last Sunday of July. The first Main Naval Parade in St Petersburg took place in 1996 to mark the Russian Navy’s 300th anniversary. The tradition of holding the annual parade in the city on this day was restored by a Presidential Executive Order in 2017.

🇷🇺 Address by Russia's President Vladimir Putin at the Main Naval Parade to mark Russia’s Navy Day (St Petersburg, July 28, 2024)

💬 Congratulations on Navy Day, a special day we always celebrate officially, with respect and love for our glorious Navy and pride for our country, a maritime power.

Russia acquired this crucial status due to its geopolitical standing, great geographical discoveries and an immense contribution to the exploration of the World Ocean, but most importantly, to the victories, hard work, determination, courage, and talent of our naval commanders and sailors.

<...>

🌐 We are sincerely delighted to welcome the crews of warships from Algeria, India and China as well as representatives of dozens of other foreign countries and delegations that have arrived for the Main Naval Parade to celebrate with us today and congratulate our sailors and commanders.

<...>

⚠️ The US administration and the German government made a noteworthy statement concerning their plans to deploy US long-range precision missile systems in Germany in 2026.

The missiles could reach ranges of major Russian state and military facilities, administrative and industrial centres, and defence infrastructure. <...>

If the United States implements these plans, we will consider ourselves free from the previously assumed unilateral moratorium on the deployment of medium and shorter-range strike weapons, including increasing the capabilities of the coastal troops of our Navy.

Today, the development of such systems in Russia is nearing completion. We will take mirror measures to deploy them, taking into account the actions of the United States, its satellites in Europe and in other regions of the world.

<...>

👉 Today, we are paying increasing attention to Washington’s efforts to escalate tensions in connection with the flights by Russian strategic aircraft. Just to remind you, Russian strategic missile carriers have not performed any air patrols far from our borders since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Russia thought this was no longer needed, with the world having changed and the Cold War becoming a thing of the past. However, the United States chose to ignore this unilateral gesture of goodwill and continued patrolling the space in the proximity of our borders.

So, since 2007, we have resumed such flights as a response to the increased activity from US strategic and reconnaissance aircraft in the regions that we believe are sensitive for us. The move has aimed, among other things, to ensure security in the Asia-Pacific region.

🎖 Today, I would like to particularly note that many naval crews are fearlessly fighting in hot spots along the engagement line during the special military operation. Just like their great ancestors, they fight to defend Sevastopol and other ports of the Black Sea and Sea of Azov, delivering devastating blows to the enemy and destroying its military facilities.

🪖Mikhail Kalashnikov, the inventor of the iconic AK-47 automatic rifle, and South Africa

We continue the series of joint publications with the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences "Russia - South Africa in the XX century: pages of common history", timed to the 300th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the 65th anniversary of the Institute, as well as the 30th anniversary of the first democratic elections in South Africa.

🇿🇦 The Soviet engineer Mikhail Kalashnikov designed the AK-47 (the Avtomat Kalashnikova), a weapon that gained an iconic status during wars of liberation worldwide including South Africa.

The 78-year-old major-general said that he produced the AK-47 after the Second World War to help protect the borders of his country. Decades later the light automatic gun with a short barrel meant to be fired from the hip or shoulder became the preferred weapon of South Africa’s freedom fighters. The Soviet Union provided AK-47s to the ANC military wing Umkhonto we Sizwe. By the time of Kalashnikov’s trip to South Africa in 1997 approximately 70 million AK-47s had been produced. The rifle’s popularity with anti-apartheid fighters stemmed from its robust durability.

The inventor of the legendary rifle travelled to South Africa to mark the 50th anniversary of his best-known design, the world’s most popular automatic rifle AK-47. “The main purpose of my work,” - as he recounted to a South African journalist - “was to design a sub-machine gun for soldiers who did not graduate from military academies. I wanted them to have simple and reliable weapons in their hands.”

During his stay Kalashnikov visited the factory in Pretoria where the Vektor R4, the standard service rifle of the South African Defence Force, was produced. He also spent several days in Western Cape attending a function in his honour at the Castle in Cape Town and hunting springbok at a game farm near Ceres. He was impressed by the friendly disposition of South Africans towards Russia, their optimism, similar problems of building a democratic society.

Nothing Sacred: Parody of "The Last Supper" at the Paris Olympic opening ceremony causes wave of outrage

What was meant to be a grand celebration turned into a major scandal. The opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics has ignited a storm of controversy.

❗️ The event featured a provocative LGBT parody of Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper,” where Christ and his Apostles were replaced with transvestites and other non-binary figures. The depiction, which was the centerpiece of the ceremony, has drawn widespread criticism all over the world.

👉 On social media, reactions have been harsh, with American billionaire Elon Musk unfollowing the official Olympic social media accounts and the French bishopric condemning the portrayal as a “mockery and abuse of Christian traditions”.

Many online have termed the opening ceremony a “collapse of Western civilization.”

📆 July 29th marks the 207th anniversary of the birth of Ivan Konstantinovich Aivazovsky, the renowned Russian painter celebrated worldwide for his marine paysages.

Aivazovsky was a pioneer among Russian landscape artists, elevating the sea as a distinct theme and symbol in his works.

🎨 His success stemmed from not just talent but also from relentless dedication and diligence. Over his lifetime, he created approximately 6,000 paintings, often working with remarkable speed.

For instance, he could finish a medium-sized painting in just two hours, while his famous work "The Ninth Wave" was completed in a mere 11 days.

Most of his masterpieces, including "The Ninth Wave," were crafted in his studio in Feodosia, Crimea. Aivazovsky believed capturing natural phenomena from life was impractical due to their ever-changing nature.

🇷🇺❤️ Aivazovsky expressed his deep devotion to his homeland, Russia, saying, "I, like a bee, gather honey from the garden to bring a grateful offering to Mother Russia" regarding his art.
