Today is the Day of Russian Science – professional holiday for Russian scientific community. Russian scientists are responsible for numerous remarkable discoveries & achievements in various areas of science. One of the latest of those - #SputnikV – world’s 1st registered anti-#COVID_19 vaccine.
The day of February 8 was not chosen by accident. On 8 February 1724, Russian Emperor Peter I founded the Academy of Sciences.
In Russia, 2021 has been declared the Year of Science and Technology. This is the ultimate recognition of the merits of Russian scientists and engineers, the enormous role of knowledge and innovation in people’s life

#OutstandingDiplomats, part 4 – Count Nikita Panin. He was chief of Russian diplomacy under Empress Catherine the Great. He is known to have masterminded the “Northern Accord” or "Northern Union" – a project of alliance of Russia, Prussia, Sweden & Poland.
Though the "Northern Accord" project was never implemented, the idea had important political consequences and influenced Russian foreign policy for many years

#RussianTrace in South Africa, episode 2. Our next stop - Simonstown Seaforth Old Burying Ground, where a memorial in honor of twelve Russian seamen buried there in XIX century is located.
The inscription on the monument says “Sacred to the memory of Russian sailors, participants of maritime expeditions of the glorious Russian Fleet (1809 – 1865). Far away from the Motherland, at the foot of African continent they found their last resting place.”
A dozen of Russian seamen lie buried here. Most of the tombstones didn’t survive so the burial sites can’t be accurately identified.

He is known to have promoted the idea of Russian Tsar Nicholas II to convene the first Peace conference in 1899 and the second one in 1907 in the Hague, on the eve of the First World War with a view to prevent to the war from breaking out.
Along with the Geneva Conventions, the Hague Conventions that were adopted at the two Conferences formed the basis of the modern international humanitarian law.
The Second Hague Conference also saw the approval of the idea to establish the League of Nations – predecessor of the United Nations
