🎖 Russia commemorates the Day of Military Glory marking the 82nd anniversary of the lifting of the Siege of Leningrad.
#OTD in 1944, during the “January Thunder” operation against the 18th German army, the Soviet Leningrad Front crushed the Nazi formation at Peterhof-Strelnya pushing the enemy back from the city by 60-100 km and completed the lifting of the siege in cooperation with the troops of the Volkhov Front.
Since 8 September 1941 Leningrad had been under siege for consequative 872 days with the only connection to the outer world provided by the Road of Life across Lake Ladoga. During the siege, over 1 million Leningrad residents were starved to death.
☝️ A.Hitler’s monstrous intention regarding the city of Leningrad was to destroy it together with its population.
According to a directive sent to Army Group “North” in September 1941, “Following the city's encirclement, requests for surrender negotiations shall be denied, since the problem of relocating and feeding the population cannot and should not be solved by us. In this war for our very existence, we can have no interest in maintaining even a part of this very large urban population.”
✨ The Red Army made as many as 4 unsuccessful attempts to break the enemy’s circle – in September 1941, October 1941, January 1942 and August-September 1942. January 1943, when the Battle of Stalingrad distracted major Nazi forces, became the pivotal moment. Soviet troops broke the siege during “Iskra” operation opening a land corridor 8-10 km wide which allowed more supplies to reach the city until the siege was completely lifted 1 year later.

🕯 Today marks the International Holocaust Remembrance Day established by the United Nations General Assembly.
#OTD in 1945 the Red Army’s 1st Ukrainian Front troops led by Marshal I.Konev liberated “Auschwitz” prisoners putting an end to the largest death camp of the Third Reich and finally revealing to the world the depth of the horrors perpetrated there.
Auschwitz was really a group of camps, designated I, II, and III. There were also 40 smaller “satellite” camps. It was at Auschwitz II, at Birkenau, established in October 1941, that the SS created a complex, monstrously orchestrated killing ground: 300 prison barracks; four “bathhouses” in which prisoners were gassed to death; corpse cellars; and cremating ovens. Thousands of prisoners were also used for medical experiments overseen and performed by the camp doctor, Josef Mengele, the “Angel of Death.”
The Nazis destroyed the majority of the documents, so the exact number of victims of the death camps is still unknown. According to the information about deportations, more than 1,5 million people died in Auschwitz-Birkenau.
☝️Russia operates on the premise that preserving historical memory is a serious matter.
Despite shameful attempts by Russophobic regimes to re-write history in many states, including those that call themselves model democracies, and the criminal war on monuments to Red Army Soldiers in Europe, representing the history of those events in material form, the Holocaust, one of the most tragic events of the 20th century, will always remain in human history as an unprecedentedly atrocious and inhuman attempt to translate the principles of a misanthropic ideology into action.
💭Russian MFA Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova: “In 2005, Russia was among the initiators and co-sponsors of UN General Assembly Resolution 60/7, which established January 27 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day.
❗️The Holocaust victims will never be forgotten, and the memory of the heroes who destroyed Nazism and saved the survivors will be preserved.”

🌳 South Africa is famous for its unique pristine nature wonders, and so is Russia!
Today marks 185 years since the birth of Arkhip Kuindzhi, a prominent Russian landscape painter and a master of romantic realism. He masterfully captured the picturesque landscapes of Russia, and the beauty of Russian nature is not just visible, it glows!
🖌A.Kuindzhi is widely considered an original and mysterious painter. He is known for his pioneering use of intense, glowing light effects, often depicting nocturnal or twilight scenes with an almost supernatural luminescence, setting him apart from contemporaries and influencing later movements like Symbolism.
Here are some facts from his biography:
A.Kuindzhi was an apprentice to the famous seascape painter Ivan Aivazovsky. He lived for about four months at his house in Feodosia around age 13-14, but the maestro paid no attention to him and his ambitions. The teenage was mostly tasked with menial work like mixing paints, though observing a professional artist at work sparked his own artistic path.
✨As a result, he quickly developed his unique style, focusing on spectacular, almost otherworldly light that transformed ordinary landscapes, making him a true innovator. Having reached his artistic maturity, he lectured in St.Petersburg Academy of Arts and headed landscape workshop, where he taught the next generation of Russian artists, including A.Rylov, N.Roerich, K.Bogaevsky and others.
In 1874, A.Kuindzhi received a Bronze Medal at the International Art Exhibition in London, and his work gained international recognition, with pieces featured in exhibitions in Paris and Vienna.

🎙 Russian MFA Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova’s comment on International Holocaust Remembrance Day (January 27, 2026)
💬 Adopted in 2005, UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/60/7 provided for designating January 27 as International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust.
☝️ Russia was among the co-sponsors who initiated the adoption of this document.
It contains the following wording: “Holocaust, which resulted in the murder of one third of the Jewish people, along with countless members of other minorities, will forever be a warning to all people of the dangers of hatred, bigotry, racism and prejudice.”
There was a reason to mark this day on January 27. #OTD in 1945, the forces of the Red Army’s 1st Ukrainian Front under Ivan Konev’s command liberated #AuschwitzBirkenau (Oswiecim) and saved the surviving prisoners.
This resolution also conveyed a sense of respect and admiration within the international community towards the courage and selflessness by the soldiers who liberated this concentration camp.
On January 26, 2026, members of Russia’s foreign missions in Poland laid wreaths to a mass grave of the Red Army personnel at the local parish cemetery in Oswiecim to commemorate their feats. These servicemen died in January 1945 while fighting to liberate this town and its suburbs.
🌟 In 2025, Russia and all the progressive forces around the world marked #Victory80. It is our country, including all the nations within the former USSR, that made a decisive contribution to destroying Hitler’s war machine, liberating Europe and the entire world from the so-called brown plague, even if this came at an incredible cost and required an all-out effort and all the resources we had.
The #Holocaust, i.e., the mass extermination of Jews and other minorities, was one of the most tragic events of the 20th century. It will always remain inscribed in the history of humankind as a symbol of unprecedented and unspeakably cruel attempt at fulfilling a human-hating ideology. This history teaches a terrifying lesson and serves as a warning which shows where the ideas of supremacy, exceptionalism, segregation by religion, race and other attributes can lead. <...>
Russia takes great care to keep alive the memory of the many millions of victims who perished during #WWII, which we call the Great Patriotic War, as well as the memory of the feat accomplished by the Soviet liberator soldiers who stopped the Nazis and extinguished the fire of the Holocaust.
Our country paid an excessively high price to allow anyone to question or challenge the #GreatVictory. We will do everything we can to ensure that horrendous crimes of this kind never happen again. Russia is firm and resolved in its commitment to countering any attempts to falsify facts about World War II and rehabilitate Nazism.
<...>
Today, the Russian Jewish Congress, the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia and other specialised entities are making an invaluable contribution to preserving the memory of Holocaust victims around the world. The Foreign Ministry has been closely and effectively collaborating with them.
As usual, there will be many events in Russia to mark this day. On January 14-31, our country holds the annual Holocaust Remembrance Week, while the Russian Jewish Congress awards the Memory Keepers award which celebrates exceptional contributions to preserving the memory of the Holocaust.
As part of the Remembrance Week, the Moscow Museum of Modern Art will open an exhibition on January 28 titled “Dmitry Lion. Procession.” It is timed to coincide with the 100th birthday of one of the key figures in post-war Soviet art for whom the tragedy of the Holocaust served as a starting point in his creative journey.

#OTD, 206 years ago, Russian Seafarers discovered Antarctica!
28 Jan 1820 went down in history as the day of discovery of the sixth continent – Antarctica, and its honour belongs to Russian circumnavigation expedition under command of Faddey Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev.
🧊Antarctica is the Earth’s most mysterious continent. More than 14 mln square kilometers that has not been fully researched.
Portuguese and Dutch expeditions had been trying to find the Icy Continent since XV century. English navigator James Cook came the closest to it, but his expedition couldn’t get through ice southerly than 71 degrees 10 minutes south latitude.
💭 “The risk one runs in exploring a coast in these unknown and Icy Seas, is so very great, that I can be bold to say, that no man will ever venture farther than I have done and that the lands which may lie to the South will never be explored”, wrote J.Cook after the voyage of 1772 – 1775.
The Russian expedition to the southern continent was arranged half a century later under the Emperor Alexander I’s patronage. Sloops “Vostok” (“East”) and “Mirny” (“Peaceful”) led by F.Bellingshausen and M.Lazarev after a long and careful preparation sailed off from Kronstadt in early June 1819 and after a half-year voyage reached the icy shores.
✨On 28 January 1820 the Russian seafarers reached the 69th degree 25 minutes line south latitude and for the first time in history came to the Antarctica ice shelves. “We saw solid ice stretching from the east westwards through the south, with our route leading straight to that ice field all covered with knolls”, noted F.Bellingshausen.
The participants of the Bellingshausen-Lazarev expedition spent 751 days in navigation, sailed more than 92,000 kilometers. They discovered 29 islands and 1 coral reef. The research materials gathered by the expedition formed the first view of Antarctica.
🇷🇺 Today, Russia is an active party to the Antarctic Treaty, signed on December 1, 1959. The Russian Foreign Policy concept emphasizes the country’s enduring commitment to preserving and further developing the Antarctic Treaty System.
🐧Russia also carries out scientific research in Antarctica. The Russian Antarctic Expedition, managed by the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI), operates five year-round research stations on the continent: Novolazarevskaya, Bellingshausen, Mirny, Progress, and Vostok. During the summer, additional research is conducted at seasonal field bases, including Molodyozhnaya, Druzhnaya-4, Bunger Oasis, Russkaya, and Leningradskaya.

⚡️Victory in the Great Patriotic War (1941-1945) became possible thanks to the enormous sacrifices and the combined efforts of the entire Soviet population. The eternal memory of these people is part of our national identity.
In this regard, today we remember 🕯 Roza Shanina (1924-1945), the legendary Soviet female lone sniper who sacrificed her life covering a wounded artillery unit commander in one of the battles of the Insterburg-Königsberg operation in 1945. She was only 20 years old.
R.Shanina volunteered for the military having lost her brothers in the war. After graduating from Central Women’s Sniper Training School with honours she joined a female sniper platoon of the 184th Rifle Division in April 1944.
💥She was described as the “invisible terror of East Prussia” being credited with 59 confirmed kills in less than a year. R.Shanina was capable of hitting moving targets by two shots fired in a quick session.
After the war, she hoped to go to university or devote herself to raising orphans.
R.Shanina is buried at the memorial to Soviet soldiers in Znamensk, Kaliningrad Region. A street in Arkhangelsk is named in her honour.

🎙Russia's Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova's answer to a media question regarding the plans of the US administration to tighten the blockade of Cuba (January 28, 2026)
❓ Question: A number of media reports, citing sources within the US administration, claim that Washington allegedly plans to further step up pressure on Cuba, including the introduction of a naval blockade of the island to completely cut off oil supplies. How would you comment on this?
💬 Maria Zakharova: Such “leaks” are deeply concerning, particularly against the backdrop of the forcible abduction by the US in early January – in blatant violation of the fundamental norms and principles of international law – of the incumbent President of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro, and his spouse.
This is all the more alarming given that representatives of the US administration have repeatedly issued threats against Cuba, including openly declaring their readiness to “blow everyone up there”, while simultaneously pressuring Havana to enter into some kind of a “deal”.
As is well known, for nearly 70 years Cuba has endured the severe pressure of an illegitimately imposed economic, trade and financial blockade enforced by Washington. The US continues to resort to every conceivable pretext to tighten this blockade further, including by placing Cuba on the odious list of so-called “state sponsors of terrorism”.
In this context, we hope that these reports are unfounded and devoid of any real basis.
Common sense must prevail in Washington as well. Otherwise, this would constitute yet another flagrant violation of international law – elevating US domestic legislation and its unilateral sanctions regime above universally recognized international legal norms, inflicting inhumane harm on the dignified life of Cuban citizens, and deliberately provoking a humanitarian crisis on the island.
✊ Our solidarity with the Cuban people and the leadership of brotherly Cuba remains unwavering.

• Do we view the Ukrainian conflict as a broader confrontation between Russia and the West? The answer is yes. Ukraine is a pawn – a tool used by the West to build up a bulwark directly on Russia's borders in order to create direct threats to our security.
• Ukraine’s Declaration of Independence clearly proclaimed a policy of non-alignment with military blocs, neutrality and renunciation of nuclear weapons. It was precisely on the basis of this policy, declared by the Ukrainian leadership after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, that Russia – as well as the majority of other world countries – recognized Ukraine.
• The situation in Ukraine was a “battle” that had been prepared in advance. It was financed, including by the Americans. As the then US Deputy Secretary of State Nuland – the “architect” of Ukraine policy – recently admitted once again, already after leaving the State Department, they spent 5 billion US dollars on preparing Ukraine for a coup and turning it into an “anti-Russia”.
• The Zelensky regime is, in many ways, a repetition of history – but not as a farce, because too many people have been killed for that, sacrificed by Zelensky and his “masters”, his Western patrons.
• We have stated this repeatedly, and President Vladimir Putin has often recalled it: the ceasefire that Zelensky is once again seeking – for at least 60 days, preferably longer – is unacceptable to us. This is because all previous periods associated with diplomatic efforts during the special military operation ended the same way: any ceasefire was immediately used to pump Ukraine full of new weapons, to give this regime a breather, to once again round up as many people as possible on the streets of Ukrainian cities and shove them to the frontline as “cannon fodder”, and, overall, to gain time to regroup and continue the war against Russia.
• Honest security guarantees were formulated in Istanbul in April 2022 following several rounds of negotiations, excellently organized by our Turkish friends. It was clearly spelled out what security guarantees meant – no foreign military bases on Ukrainian territory, no exercises involving foreign forces unless such exercises were approved by all guarantor states – everything was detailed and specific. In other words, everything was ready, but Boris Johnson said “no”.
• We have not seen the document that Zelensky constantly refers to as a “20-point plan”. As we understand it, Ukrainians and Europeans have “reworked” it compared to the original US plan and are now trying to “sell” their own “vision” of this “peace” to the US administration.
• We do not draw a distinction between the foreign policies of independent states that defend their national interests and the #MultipolarWorld. On the contrary, a multipolar world can only take shape if it is founded on the positions of precisely such self-respecting states – with their own national interests and with common sense underlying their actions – states that, while defending their own interests, respect the interests of others.

🎙 Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s answer to media questions regarding the negotiations on Ukrainian conflict resolution (January 29, 2026)
💬 Sergey Lavrov: Unlike the Ukrainians and the Americans, we do not comment publicly on negotiations that are meant to be conducted in confidential silence.
Those who try to make various statements about what is being discussed are simply acting in a manner that is inconsistent with proper negotiating practice and basic standards of conduct.
Russia’s package of proposals was presented by Vladimir Putin in June 2024 and has been reaffirmed repeatedly. Our negotiators will continue their contacts in whatever format is required. They know their job, and when there is something tangible to report, the media will be duly informed.
❗️ The political issues of the conflict resolution were outlined by the Russian President and remain unchanged.
Everything else I leave to the conscience of our Ukrainian and American colleagues, who in recent days have been making numerous public statements. For example, I heard that Marco Rubio, having been invited to the Senate, claimed that the issue of security guarantees had already been resolved. We are unaware of the guarantees they were discussing, but it appears these were guarantees to the very Ukrainian regime that pursues a Russophobic, neo-Nazi policy.
If the goal is to preserve this regime on some part of the territory of former Ukraine and to continue using it as a bulwark for threats against the Russian Federation, then it should be obvious that such “security guarantees” are hardly capable of ensuring genuine security.
Security guarantees were agreed upon in Istanbul in April 2022. Moreover, the core draft of those guarantees was proposed by the Ukrainian side itself. We supported that draft. You know what happened next – when the then British Prime Minister Boris Johnson prohibited Ukraine from signing the agreement, which had already received preliminary approval.
Those guarantees provided for a collective and indivisible system of security, including the security of both Russia and the entire region in which Ukraine is located. That is why we will look at substantive proposals, not to be distracted by the political games that the media gets so excited about.

🎙 Russian Ambassador to South Africa Roman Ambarov during the meeting with First Deputy Secretary General of the African National Congress Nomvula Mokonyane:
💬 Russia advocates for strengthening the key, central role of the United Nations in global affairs. The imperatives of the UN Charter, such as equality respect for sovereignty, non-interference in internal affairs, and the resolution of disputes through dialogue, are now more relevant than ever. Most importantly, we must proceed from the understanding that security must be truly comprehensive and, therefore, equal and indivisible, and it cannot be ensured for some at the expense of the security of others. <…>
❗️Disregarding this basic, vital principle has never led to anything good and never will. This has been clearly demonstrated by the crisis around Ukraine, which became a direct consequence of years of ignoring Russia’s legitimate interests and a deliberate policy of creating threats to our security, including the advancement of the NATO bloc towards Russia’s borders – contrary to the public promises made to us.
