Ayฤt of Sakฤซnah (Tranquility) | Incident of Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullah)

Sakeenah is the contentment and peace that Allฤh places in the hearts of His servants;

it brings peace and tranquility to a person, it makes him calm (very relaxed in the face of hardship),

it gives him strength and courage at the time of fear,

- so fitnah does not shake him,

- tests do not distract him,

- grief does not consume him,

- and his eemaan and yaqeen (certainty) increases.

Ibn al-Qayyim (rahimahullah) said about sakinah:

This (having sakeenah during hard times) is a rank among the ranks that Allah (Himself) grants;

this rank is not (simply achieved) due to man's own effort and earnings.

Ibn al-Qayyim (rahimahullah) also said:

Indeed, Allฤh mentioned โ€˜as-Sakinah (ุงู„ุณูƒูŠู†ุฉ)' (Tranquility) in His Book in six places:

โ€ข al-Baqarah: 248,
โ€ข at-Tawbah: 26, 40,
โ€ข al-Fath: 4, 18, 26.

He (rahimahullah) further says:

Shaykh Ibn Taimiyyah (rahimahullah) used to read the Ayat of Sakinah when matters became intense for him.

And I heard him talk about a great incident which occurred when he was (afflicted and) sick (this is the incident of 73 jinn that โ€˜intrudedโ€™ upon Ibn Taymiyyah asking him to give up his daโ€™wah, his sickness lasted for 3 days)

The general intellect is too deficient to comprehend how evil ones emerged and fought against him in his state of weakness.

Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullah) says,

โ€œWhen this matter became intense, I said to my relatives and those around me: 'Read the Ayฤt of Sakinah!โ€™

Then I became free from this condition (of spiritual illness), and I sat up as if a transformation had taken place and there was nothing wrong with me (the sickness was gone).'

Ibn al-Qayyim (rahimahullah) said,

I also tried this, and I read these Ayat of Sakinah (at times) when the heart becomes agitated due to what affects it

and (after reciting) I witnessed the amazing effects of these Ayat on the tranquility of the heart and its peacefulness.

[Ibn al-Qayyim (rahimahullah), Madarij as-Salikin, 2/502]

O Allah, place light in my heart,
and on my tongue light,
and in my ears light
and in my sight light,
and above me light,
and below me light,
and to my right light,
and to my left light,
and before me light
and behind me light.
Place in my soul light.
Magnify for me light,
and amplify for me light.
Make for me light
and make me a light.
O Allah, grant me light,
and place light in my nerves,
and in my body light
and in my blood light
and in my hair light
and in my skin light.
O Allah, make for me a light in my
grave... and a light in my bones.
Increase me in light,
increase me in light,
increase me in light
Grant me light upon light

"O Allah!

To You I have submitted,

and in You I have believed,

and in You I put my trust (upon you I rely),

and to You do have turned in repentance,

and through You I make my case (with You I contend, appeal to you, seek judgement through You, bring my case to You)

O Allah, I seek refuge in Your Might (Power)โ€”there is none worthy of worship except You Aloneโ€”that You safeguard me against going astray (or lest I go astray)

You are the Ever-Living One Who never dies,

while the jinn and the humans will all perish".

[al-Bukhari and Muslim, Riyadh as Saliheen, 75]
