GitHub turned into a bloody spam cannon overnight. Some wanker figured out how to weaponize GitHub notifications, so people started getting alerts and emails about fake “GitCoin (#GTC) grants.” Looks legit at first glance — familiar UI, trusted sender — so plenty of devs clicked without thinking.

Click the link, connect your wallet, and bang: you’re staring at a phishing site pretending to hand out free cash. Instead of a grant, you hand over your keys. Even proper names — Jeff Geerling and others — got mass-blasted with these fake “issues.” That’s the nasty part: it didn’t touch code at all. It just hijacked trust.

This isn’t some amateurish spam run. It’s a reminder that our faith in developer infrastructure is fragile as hell. You don’t need to break the repo — just hijack the channel people trust and you’ve got chaos. Today it’s GitHub notifications, tomorrow it could be something far worse.

Stay sharp. Don’t click anything just because it looks like GitHub said so. If it looks too tasty to be true, it probably is.
