现代计算机系统内的国际地区归类，是依照国际标准化组织的 ISO-3166 标准来执行的。它有多个子版本：在 ISO 3166-1 中，港澳台的代码为 HK / MO / TW ，在中国政府参与修订的 ISO 3166-2 中更新成了 CN-HK / CN-MO / CN-TW。
不过需要注意的是，尽管行政归属上，北京、香港都是中国的子集，但电信系统中，+852 和 +86 是平级的，不存在 +86（852） 的拨法。
所以一般写作国家和地区以避免误解。
类似地，依据 ISO 3166-1 标准，写作香港（香港）是没有问题的，而依据 ISO 3166-2 标准，更改为香港（中国）自然也是没有问题的。
类似地，美国关岛（海外领土）的标识为关岛（关岛），而非关岛（美国）。
