Community Leaders Townhall (22 January 2025)

On 22 January 2025, UNHCR hosted a town hall meeting with 119 refugee leaders from 67 community groups to gather input and address community concerns.

During the event, UNHCR introduced the new Representative, Louise Aubin, and the new Deputy Representative, Leyla Nugmanova. The Representative urged community leaders to present a united voice as refugees and emphasized the importance of building partnerships between community groups to enhance resource sharing and capacity building. UNHCR reaffirmed its support for such engagements and the exploration of partnerships to strengthen community-led initiatives.

Community leaders raised critical issues such as registration timelines, access to detention, and priorities for 2025. The Representative reaffirmed UNHCR’s commitment to advocating for refugee protection in Malaysia, including access to education, healthcare, and livelihoods.

While advocacy efforts continue, refugee groups also play a key role in promoting peaceful coexistence by reminding community members to abide by the laws of the country. To foster further understanding between refugees and the local community, UNHCR is developing the Culture Orientation Module which will equip refugees with essential knowledge on local norms and customs.

As healthcare becomes more expensive, it is crucial that all refugees and asylum-seekers enroll themselves in the Refugee Medical Insurance (REMEDI) and take steps to protect their finances by signing up for the Touch n’ Go e-Wallet.

UNHCR encouraged refugee groups to strengthen their support networks by engaging with local councils and other stakeholders in their communities. Once again, the Representative underscored the value of partnerships in ensuring the sustainability of these efforts.
