Although there were temples for specific gatherings, the very idea of "the church" was more about community and taking the teachings from town to town, wherever people needed to be met in their regular lives, to teach them the Word. Of course, reading the Bible can be incredibly useful in understanding God's teachings and demands, and reading the words of Christ is especially helpful (get a red letter Bible), but given that for most of known human history, MOST CHRISTIANS WERE ILLITERATE and could not read, there was never any strict requirement to be able to read in order to enter heaven. Only the highly-educated scribes, priests, academics and high officials could actually read, yet the illiterate were readily welcomed into heaven as long as they qualified in their deeds, faith and behavior. Fascinating, isn't it? Your pastor probably never told you any of this. I wonder why?
