As we enter 2020, I want to share a few thoughts about gatekeepers and Matt Drudge. The popular ConInc attitude now, echoed by White House operatives leaking to the Beltway press, is that something is "wrong" with Drudge. "What happened to Drudge?" Why isn't he championing Trump? Blahblahblah. GOP money is now being poured into anti-Drudge alternatives that will dutifully regurgitate the stories and talking points that ConInc wants to feed the Fox News masses. I first subscribed to Drudge's email service in 1997, when I worked at the Seattle Times. He reached out to me on AOL asking if I would be a Pacific Northwest "stringer." I would send regional stories on occasion and kept in touch when he launched a short-lived show in the early days of Fox. Maybe emailed a half-dozen times since then. Have never met him. Drudge was never GOP and never ConInc. His site was never obsessed 24/7 with partisan politics. Its roots were in destroying media gatekeepers and empowering citizen journalism. CITIZEN JOURNALISM, not GOP advocacy. Drudge answered to no one. If he wanted to throw links to stories on cell phone/cancer risks, Camille Paglia, or Pat Buchanan, there was no one to tell him no. The reason all the latest alternatives will fail is because they are boring, establishment operations and echo chambers. Again, I can’t defend myself because I’m banned. Siskind suggested the vigil so my wife brought our children to her front door (I stayed in driveway) to ask her why she’d do such a thing. She pushed it to a different location after the confrontation.
