Al Jazeera revealed in an investigative report that a number of universities in the UK contracted a private security firm to monitor the social media accounts of students and academics, particularly those involved in pro Palestine activities.
According to the report, 12 British universities paid a company called Horus, run by former military intelligence officials, to analyze the content of studentsβ accounts and produce detailed reports on their views and political activity. The measures also included conducting background checks on certain individuals, including speakers invited to participate in university events.
This step came amid a rise in student protests linked to the war on Gaza strip, while human rights organizations considered the monitoring of studentsβ digital activity to be a violation of privacy and a threat to freedom of expression.
