Verify Social Media Posts, Especially in Times of Fitnah!

Ibn Sirin said: They did not used to ask about the Isnad (chain of narration), but when the fitnah occurred, they said, "Name for us your men," so that the people of the Sunnah would be looked at and their hadith would be taken, and the people of innovation would be looked at and their hadith would not be taken." [Muqaddimah Sahih Muslim]

With the recent turmoil in the middle east, some people have spread social media posts without verification. Be careful about spreading unverified statements. One such example is this quote highlighted below where Imam al-Awza'i is quoted as saying: If an evildoer meets an evildoer and they fight, and Allah destroys one of them, then all praise is due to Allah, and if He destroys both of them, then all praise is due to Allah in abundance.”

Various students of knowledge have searched for this statement in the reference provided and in other sources to no avail.

Another recent example is a statement attributed to Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah:

"If two groups of disbelievers fight, the Muslim rejoices at their fighting and says: All praise is due to Allah who gives power to the oppressors over one another."

Another statement that students of knowledge have reported as not found in the source provided nor in other books of Ibn Taymiyyah.

This is yet another reason to not use social media as a primary source of knowledge! Stick to the lessons of the Scholars and their students, seeking knowledge in the masajid as was done by the Salaf.
