🔎 Machine Learning for Complex Quantum States

🏛 Different institutions across Germany and Switzerland
🇩🇪 🇨🇭Germany and Switzerland
👤 -

Deadline: 27 February 2026

⚠️ Apply Link ⚠️

🗣 More information: Our recently established collaborative research initiative “Machine Learning for Complex Quantum States” (MLCQS) – a consortium spanning eleven different institutions across Germany and Switzerland – is seeking to fill several PhD positions.
MLCQS will develop and employ tools of machine learning to investigate composite quantum systems with a focus on artificial quantum systems. Advanced capabilities of modern experimental techniques to manipulate and probe many-body quantum systems have made quantum simulation and quantum computing with substantial numbers of qubits a reality. But at the same time, fully leveraging their potential poses new challenges related to high-dimensional state representations and data as well as optimal control strategies. MLCQS will tackle these challenges by developing machine-learning-enhanced techniques for simulation, data analysis, and control. Our goals range from gaining theoretical insight to advancing experiments with ultracold atoms. Thereby, we will enable new insights into complex quantum states and dynamics.

🔎 Quantum machine learning

🏛 University of Malta
🇲🇹 Malta
👤 -

Deadline: 9 March 2026

⚠️ Apply Link ⚠️

🗣 More information: This project investigates the application of Quantum Machine Learning (QML) algorithms, with emphasis on astronomical data analysis. Current analysis methods often struggle to extract faint astronomical signals obscured by noise within large, high-dimensional datasets, hindering progress in our understanding of the cosmos. By developing resource-efficient QML models tailored for astronomical data, we aim to achieve significant advancements in three key areas. Firstly, we aim to enhance signal detection capabilities, potentially leading to the identification of previously undetectable objects or faint signals from distant galaxies. Secondly, these QML models will be trained to improve feature recognition within the data, providing deeper insights into the characteristics and behaviours of astronomical objects.

🔎 Open quantum system simulations with trapped ions

🏛 Stockholm University
🇸🇪 Sweden
👤 Prof. Markus Hennrich

Deadline: 2 March 2026

⚠️ Apply Link ⚠️

🗣 More information: The Trapped Ion Quantum Technology Group at Stockholm University invites applications for a highly motivated PhD student to join our experimental trapped ion research. The aim of the PhD project is to investigate open spin-boson systems with trapped ions. This position is part of the QuantERA project " Collective quantum phenomena in dissipative systems – towards time-crystal applications in sensing and metrology (CoQuaDis)".

The CoQuaDis project aims to study many-body phases in open quantum systems and to demonstrate their use in sensing and timekeeping. At Stockholm University, we realize such systems using crystals of trapped ions, which provide long trapping times, controllable interactions mediated by collective vibrations, and in-situ cooling. This enables stable operation and continuous readout of dissipative many-body phases. This highly controllable platform allows us to address fundamental questions in open quantum many-body dynamics.

The PhD project is experimental and will be carried out within the Trapped Ion Quantum Technology Group at Stockholm University. It will involve close collaboration with theoreticians at the University of Tübingen, Germany and the IFISC, Mallorca, Spain.
