UAE 'Voluntarily' Pulls Troops From Yemen After Saudi Airstrikes
Saudi Arabia bombed alleged arms shipments bound for the UAE-backed STC, and demanded a withdrawal of all Emirati forces from Yemen within 24 hours
The UAE Defense Ministry announced the termination of its military mission in Yemen on 30 December, hours after Saudi Arabia targeted what it said were Emirati arms shipments and demanded a withdrawal of Abu Dhabi’s forces within 24 hours.
“The Ministry of Defense announces the termination of the remaining counterterrorism teams in Yemen,” the ministry said, adding that the move came “of its own volition, ensuring the safety of its personnel, and in coordination with relevant partners.”
Prior to the Emirati Defense Ministry statement, sources cited by Al Mayadeen said that the UAE-backed Southern Transitional Council (STC) was in “a state of panic and chaos” after the Saudi airstrikes early on Tuesday.
The sources added that the UAE-run operations room in Yemen was trying to “calm down officers of the STC” after the attack, and that there was a “complete disregard by Emirati officers for the call by the head of the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) in Yemen, Rashad al-Alimi, to leave the country.”
Meanwhile, divisions are arising within the Saudi-backed PLC government, which is closely linked to the STC.
