Over 180 Palestinians Freed From Israeli Prisons, Many Show Signs Of 'Torture, Starvation'

Palestinian civil society groups and the Red Cross condemned the 'horrific' conditions of the prisoners and urged the international community to hold accountable those responsible

Israel released 183 Palestinian detainees in exchange for three Israeli captives on 1 February as part of the fourth prisoner swap under the ceasefire agreement underway in Gaza.

The group of detainees consists of 111 Palestinians from the Gaza Strip who were abducted by the Israeli army during its ethnic cleansing campaign in the enclave. Additionally, 32 detainees are from the occupied West Bank; they were transferred to the International Red Cross from the Ofer Prison facility close to Ramallah.

The moment the buses carrying freed Palestinian prisoners arrived in Khan Yunis, Gaza.

Palestinian health authorities report that many of the released detainees were taken directly to medical facilities due to signs of torture, starvation, and infections, including scabies. “Once again, every time prisoners are released, we find the prisoners’ bodies reflecting the level of crimes committed against them, including torture that is unprecedented in its level after October 7,” the Palestinian Prisoner’s Society (PPS) said in a statement.

“The transfer of a number of released prisoners directly to hospitals to receive treatment, after spending years in captivity, confirms the extent of the ugliness of what they are exposed to inside fascist prisons, where the occupation practices brutal methods of torture that violate all international norms and laws related to prisoners,” the Prisoners' Media Office in Gaza denounced.

....Earlier on Saturday, Hamas released three Israeli captives to officials from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Two of the captives were freed in a customary ceremony in front of onlookers in the southern city of Khan Yunis, while the third was handed over to the ICRC later in Gaza City in the north.

South Lebanon Homes Burn, Fisherman Captured As Israel Ceasefire Violations Continue

Israeli DM threatens total destruction of Hezbollah over surveillance drone

As it does virtually weekly, Israel reiterated today that civilians are not to return to their homes in any areas of southern Lebanon Israel currently occupies. This apparently includes not just villages, but the Mediterranean Sea as well, as an Israeli military boat captured a Lebanese fisherman near the coast at Ras Naqoura.

Naqoura is the southernmost Lebanese coastal village, only a couple of miles from the Israeli border. There is no specific Israeli order against fishing there, however, and this is just another expansion of an open-ended occupation of Lebanese territory.

Earlier in the weekend, Israel was reportedly “ withdrawing ” from the western part of southern Lebanon. This, in spite of an IDF surveillance post overlooking the Tyre District, which includes Naqoura. Even fishing in the presence of Israeli forces isn’t allowed apparently, so the withdrawal seems very much overstated.

Not that Israel hasn’t withdrawn from a few places. Further east, Israeli troops did leave the village of Ayta ash-Shab last week. Reporters from Asharq al-Awsat returned to the village with residents, and found that 90% of homes were totally destroyed, and any remaining buildings have sustained major damage. Water and electricity infrastructure in the border village was also totally destroyed.

This is a recurring theme, as throughout the “ceasefire” Israel continued to demolish and burn homes, and the few places the IDF abandoned were those it had finished destroying. Over the weekend, there were additional reports of Israeli troops burning homes in the Marjayoun District.

Trump says Americans could feel ‘some pain’ from his new tariffs that are triggering a trade war

President Donald Trump said Sunday that Americans could feel “some pain” from the emerging trade war triggered by his tariffs against Canada, Mexico and China, and claimed that Canada would “cease to exist” without its trade surplus with the United States.

The trade penalties that Trump signed Saturday at his Florida resort caused a mix of panic, anger and uncertainty, and threatened to rupture a decades-old partnership on trade in North America while further straining relations with China.

Trump on Sunday night threatened to impose steeper tariffs elsewhere, telling reporters that it will “definitely happen” with the European Union and possibly with the United Kingdom as well.

He brushed aside retaliatory measures from Canada, saying, ““If they want to play the game, I don’t mind. We can play the game all they want.”...

By following through on a campaign pledge, Trump may also have simultaneously broken his promise to voters in last year’s election that his administration could quickly reduce inflation. That means the same frustration he is facing from other nations might also spread domestically to consumers and businesses.

His administration has not said how high that price could be or what improvements would need to be seen in stopping illegal immigration and the smuggling of fentanyl to merit the removal of the tariffs that Trump imposed under the legal justification of an economic emergency. The tariffs are set to launch Tuesday.

“If prices go up, it’s because of other people’s reactions to America’s laws,” his homeland secretary, Kristi Noem, said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

In his Truth Social post, Trump took particular aim at Canada, which responded with retaliatory measures. Trump is placing a 25% tariff on Canadian goods, with a 10% tax on oil, natural gas and electricity. Canada is imposing 25% tariffs on more than $155 billion Canadian (US$105 billion) on U.S. products, including alcohol and fruit.

Trump railed against Canada’s trade surplus with the United States: “We don’t need anything they have. We have unlimited Energy, should make our own Cars, and have more Lumber than we can ever use.”

Despite Trump’s assertion that the U.S does not need Canada, one-quarter of the oil that the America consumes per day is from its ally to the north. He reiterated his false claim that America subsidizes Canada.

Trump contended that without that surplus, “Canada ceases to exist as a viable Country. Harsh but true! Therefore, Canada should become our Cherished 51st State. Much lower taxes, and far better military protection for the people of Canada — AND NO TARIFFS!”

Hillman, the ambassador, has said the U.S. had about a $75 billion Canadian ($51 billion) trade deficit with Canada last year...

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is encouraging Canadians to buy more Canadian goods, and says Trump’s moves will only cause pain across North America. More than 75% of Canada’s exports go to the U.S. Canada will first target alcohol, cosmetics and paper products; a second round later will include passenger vehicles, trucks, steel and aluminum products, certain fruits and vegetables, beef, pork, dairy products and more.

Canada is the largest export market for 36 states and Mexico is the largest trading partner of the U.S.

Elusive Phase Change Finally Spotted In A Quantum Simulator

Researchers saw a chain of atoms in a quantum simulator go from being magnetic to not magnetic at all, the first time such a change has ever been seen in one spatial dimension

After decades of looking, researchers have seen a string of atoms go through a 1D phase change so elusive that it could only happen inside a quantum simulator.

“One motivation [for our experiment] is really trying to understand fundamental physics. We’re trying to understand just the basic states that matter can be in,” says Alexander Schuckert at the University of Maryland.

He and his colleagues used electromagnetic fields to arrange 23 ions of the element ytterbium into a line, forming a nearly one-dimensional chain. This device can be used for quantum computing, but in this case, the researchers used the chain as a simulator instead.

Within it, they built a 1D ytterbium magnet one atom at a time. Previous calculations predicted this type of magnet would become unmagnetised when warmed, thanks to quantum effects. But no past experiment had achieved this phase transition.

One reason for the difficulty is that systems like quantum computers and simulators typically only work well when they are very cold. Warming them to make the phase transition occur can thus cause malfunctions, says Schuckert.

To avoid this, he and his colleagues tuned the initial quantum state of the atoms so that, as time went on, the 1D magnet’s collective state changed as if its temperature had been increased. This revealed the never-before-seen phase transition.

The achievement is very exotic because chains of atoms generally shouldn’t undergo phase transitions, says Mohammad Maghrebi at Michigan State University. The researchers were only able to engineer it because they could make each ion interact with others that were far from it, even though they weren’t touching. This pushed the whole line into an unusual collective behaviour.

Because their simulator makes such exotic states of matter possible, it could be used to study theoretical systems that may be very rare – or even not exist – in nature, says Maghrebi.

Schuckert suggests quantum simulators could also help explain odd electric or magnetic behaviours that some materials show in the real world. But to do so, these devices must be able to reach higher temperatures than they can today. They can currently model extremely cold temperatures only, but he says higher-temperature simulations may be possible within five years.

And even more existing and theoretical systems could be studied if the simulators can be made larger, for example by arranging the ions into two-dimensional arrays, says Andrea Trombettoni at the University of Trieste in Italy. “This will suggest new physics to explore,” he says.

Senator Who Led Assange Extradition Demands, Bob Menendez, Sentenced for Corruption.

Former U.S. Senator Bob Menendez, who resigned in August 2024 after serving as the Democratic chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has been sentenced to 11 years in prison. He was convicted of acting as a foreign agent, bribery, extortion and obstruction of justice. Authorities discovered hidden gold bars and more than $480,000 in cash during the investigation.

Menendez was a prominent proponent in the Senate for the extradition of Julian Assange. He spearheaded efforts to persuade the U.S. government to apply pressure on Ecuador to expel Assange from its embassy in London. This included leading a group of Democrats in a letter to then-Vice President Mike Pence, as well as another letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Additionally, he penned a letter in Spanish, which was published in Ecuador, threatening economic repercussions if the country did not comply with the demand to hand over Assange.

Throughout his career, Menendez received substantial financial support from pro-Israeli Political Action Committees (PACs), amassing $2,501,847—ranking him just behind former Senators Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton in this regard.

However, it was his acceptance of funds from Qatar and Egypt that ultimately saw him sentenced to prison. Menendez was also federally indicted for corruption in 2006 and 2015 but he was successful in having those charges dropped.

Intelligence Community Directive 406 Expands US Spy Agencies’ Ties With Big Tech

Intelligence Community Directive 406 was signed in the dying days of the Biden Administration – on January 16 – essentially, yet another part in a recent big drive, pushed particularly strongly during the recent WEF meetings in Davos , to promote “public-private” partnerships .

The directive, as Ken Klippenstein reports signed by the then director of national intelligence, was focused on encouraging US intelligence agencies to “partner” with those privately owned corporations that already have troves of data at their disposal – such as, for example, tech corporations behind social platforms, but also those developing AI.

A new administration has taken over in the US, and as of this time, it remains unclear how or if it intends to implement and use these newly introduced powers.

The order’s key provisions are to facilitate how spy agencies can use both data and expertise that corporations have. The misgivings about this particular policy view have to do with how vast both these categories have become, and how they have fueled financial success of tech companies, and therefore their role.

It could also be read as one last ditch effort to compromise the credibility of Big Tech, and put a question mark over some new trends, involving a number of these corporations openly turning against their “tormentors” of many years, and embracing the new administration.

And, if the order were to be carried out by that new administration, it would see intelligence agencies going “all in” to create – or deepen – their work with the said companies, including by employing “risk acceptance” as a part of prioritizing National Security Entity (NSE) engagements.

This comes down to the US intelligence apparatus supposedly relaxing its own security restrictions in order to advance such “partnerships.”

The document details how this should happen, one thing being “expanding the use of one-time read-ins” which would do away with previously established security clearance protocols when the need is identified for private individuals to be “briefed” by US spy agencies.

Observers note that the directive is murky in terms of what specific kind of “engagement and cooperation” it seeks to promote, but, Ken Klippenstein writes, “their target clearly includes the appistocracy who attended President Trump’s inauguration last week.”

Klippenstein’s take is that the government needs Big Tech more than is the case the other way around. The Trump administration’s moves, specifically around how the directive is carried out, will shed light on that point.

Trump Says He Wants Ukraine To Guarantee Access To Rare Earth Minerals In Exchange For Military Aid

The president said Ukraine is 'willing to do it'

President Trump said Monday that he’s looking to reach an agreement with Ukraine that will guarantee US access to rare earth minerals in the country in exchange for continued US military aid.

“We’re looking to do a deal with Ukraine where they’re going to secure what we’re giving them with their rare earth and other things,” Trump told reporters at the Oval Office . “We want a guarantee. We’re handing them money, hand over fist.”

The president suggested Ukraine would agree to such a proposal. “I want to have security of rare earth,” he said. “We’re putting in hundreds of billions of dollars. They have great rare earth. And I want security of the rare earth, and they’re willing to do it.”

Trump also said that European countries should be paying more for military aid to Ukraine to get on an equal level of spending with the US. “Europe is not keeping up with us. They should equalize,” he said.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) has frequently brought up Ukraine’s rare earth minerals as a reason to continue fueling the proxy war.
