Thiel-Linked HHS Nominee Threatens MAHA Ambitions With Biotech Stance — Whitney Webb

Biotech investor and Peter Thiel associate Jim O’Neill is poised to usher in a deregulatory paradigm that would allow a proliferation of dubious products on the US market under the guise of “innovation” and “efficiency.”

O’Neill’s Connections to the Biotech Industry

..During O’Neill’s tenure in a top position at Mithril, the venture capital firm invested in several significant biotech companies. These include uBiome, which was also backed by Andreessen Horowitz and the Sam Altman-run Y-Combinator. The company was founded in 2012 “to sequence the microbiome,” allowing patients to “explore their microbiome” via the company’s microbial genomic test and their possession of the “largest microbiome database in the world.”

The company’s series B funding was led by 8VC, the venture capital firm created by Palantir co-founder and Thiel associate Joe Lonsdale. The company was later caught overbilling patients, pressuring them to take multiple tests when it was unnecessary, and also pressuring doctors to approve tests, including for patients with no symptoms. The FBI raided the company’s offices in 2019. In 2021, the co-founders were each charged with more than 40 criminal counts, including healthcare, securities and wire fraud.

Another biotech company backed heavily by Mithril during O’Neill’s time as managing director is Fractyl Health, which Mithril began funding in 2014. Fractyl has been developing 2 products, Revita – an outpatient procedure that modifies the lining of the colon to target obesity and type 2 diabates, and Rejuva – a “one-time gene therapy” targeting the pancreas meant to “enable durable weight loss and long-term remission of type 2 diabetes.” Neither of the company’s products have been approved by the FDA and clinical studies on them have yet to be performed, despite the company having been in business for over a decade...

The chair of Fractyl’s board is the co-founder of Mithril alongside Thiel, Ajay Royan. Another board member, Marc Elia, sits on the board of the Mithril-backed biotech firm Invivyd (formerly Adagio Therapeutics). Also on the board of Fractyl is former U.S. Senator Bill Bradley, who is also on the board of the Mithril-backed fintech and stablecoin-issuing firm Paxos. Bradley’s connections in tech also extend to figures adjacent to Jeffrey Epstein, as Bradley was notably affiliated with Ghislaine Maxwell’s husband Scott Borgerson and his firm Cargometrics—a satellite surveillance company that offers “unique data products and [software] solutions broadly to the investment management and maritime shipping & logistics markets.”🤔✍️

O’Neill has also had several notable connections to other biotech firms following his departure from Mithril in 2019. These include Oisin Biotechnologies, where O’Neill was a board observer from 2019 to 2021. Oisin develops therapies focused on longevity and “age-related diseases” that leverage a “new-non-viral delivery technology” they call Fusogenix Proteo-Lipid Vehicle...

Trump Orders Migrant Detention Facility At Guantanamo Bay To Operate At ‘Full Capacity’

President Donald Trump is preparing a migrant processing facility in US-occupied Cuba to house as many as 30,000 migrants illegally living in the US.

On the campaign trail, Trump made immigration a central issue, pledging to expel people from the US, with an emphasis on convicted criminals. On Wednesday, the President signed an executive order to make it possible to send some of those people to a migrant detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

“I hereby direct the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of Homeland Security to take all appropriate actions to expand the Migrant Operations Center at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay to full capacity to provide additional detention space for high-priority criminal aliens unlawfully present in the United States,” the order says.

The migrant facility at Guantanamo Bay is separate from the CIA torture prison that was established during the George W. Bush presidency. However, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem made statements that draw parallels between the facilities.

“There might be some resources that could be established for the worst of the worst at Guantanamo Bay, and that’s something that he is evaluating along with our team at the Department of Homeland Security,” she told CNN.

During the Bush administration, Americans were regularly told not to worry about the unconstitutional torture taking place at the GITMO prison as the detainees were the “ worst of the worst .” However, the claim was debunked as an overwhelming number of the detainees at GITMO were innocent.

The West Bank offensive closely resembles previous missions in the Palestinian city, where most armed individuals are young criminals who fled the refugee camp

Even on the way to the refugee camp in the northern West Bank city of Jenin, it's not difficult to see that the Israeli army operation there is just one more of the many that the military has carried out there in recent years. And it probably won't be the last.

The army's routes into the refugee camp in Jenin remain unchanged, and during a 15-minute drive, there is no gunfire or explosions. The residents have fled, leaving behind a scene of destroyed homes, cars and roads.

Army officials appear to have felt the need to explain what was different in this operation from prior rounds. "There's a substantial difference between this operation and the others," told Haaretz Col. A., the commander of the Menashe Brigade, whose full name cannot be disclosed according to new IDF regulations.

"In all the operations up to now, we carried out raids, but this time we want to neutralize the Jenin battalion," he said, adding that his goal is "to reshape the area" so that the army "can finish the job and confidently say that the Jenin battalion is not effective."

But even Col. A., who spoke in terms of "the Hamas battalion in the refugee camp," is well aware that there's no such thing. Until recently, senior IDF and Shin Bet security service officers disparagingly called them "armed thugs," young criminals who had found a haven in the refugee camp and had been getting a few hundred dollars to shoot at IDF forces.

But when Col. A. was asked when Hamas created a military battalion in the refugee camp, he was quick to acknowledge: "They call themselves a battalion, [but] It's not really a battalion."

Based on his comments, it appears that the army personnel understood that Israeli politicians were demanding that a link be made between the Jenin operation and the war in the Gaza Strip.
About an hour after security forces declared last week that it had begun an anti-terrorism operation in Jenin, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich announced that "after Gaza and Lebanon, today, with God's help, we've also begun to change the security outlook in Judea and Samaria," referring to the West Bank, adding that it was in accordance with "the war goals added by the security cabinet" at the request of Smotrich's Religious Zionism party.

In the days before the operation, the terms of a deal for the return of hostages and a cease-fire in Gaza had begun to be reported, and Smotrich and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had come under major criticism over the deal from their supporters.

Smotrich and his cabinet colleagues hoped that the Jenin operation, dubbed Operation Iron Wall, would provide a way of presenting the military campaign as directly related to the war against Hamas in Gaza.

The IDF appears to have applied combat methods from Gaza to other fronts where it has operated. Along the army's routes, bulldozers have been demolishing buildings, though in the Jenin camp, the damage is less visible, with gunfire marks being the most noticeable.

Meta is scrambling.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is scrambling after a small Chinese startup called DeepSeek turned Silicon Valley upside down with its chatbot app.

The company's latest R1 AI model can run circles around the competition from Meta, OpenAI, and Anthropic — and at a tiny fraction of the cost.

Despite some skepticism over DeepSeek's claims, the debut has led to some serious soul-searching among AI investors, with the ChatGPT competitor wiping out an estimated $1 trillion in value among other AI companies on Monday. In the most extreme example, AI chipmaker Nvidia set a new record for the biggest single-day loss of any company in history .

Among others, the app appears to have caught Meta with its pants down. In response, the company assembled several"war rooms" of engineers, The Information reports , in a desperate attempt to get ahead of the situation.

The war rooms are now hard at work, analyzing DeepSeek and looking for possible changes to make to Meta's flagship AI, Llama.

Trump White House Reveals Drones Over NJ Were Authorized By FAA For Research

"This was not the enemy."

During the first press briefing of the new Trump administration on Tuesday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt revealed that the drones spotted over New Jersey in December had been authorized by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Leavitt read out a statement from President Donald Trump, saying, "after research and study, the drones that were flying over New Jersey in large numbers were authorized to be flown by the FAA for research and various other reasons." "Many of these drones were also hobbyists, recreational and private individuals that enjoy flying drones. In time, it got worse due to curiosity. This was not the enemy." Ahead of taking office, Trump told reporters on the topic of the New Jersey drones, "Look, our military knows where they took off from. If it's a garage, they can go right into that garage. They know where it came from and where it went. And for some reason, they don't want to comment. And I think they'd be better off saying what it is. Our military knows and our president knows. And for some reason, they want to keep people in suspense. I can't imagine it's the enemy because it was the enemy they's blast it out." President Joe Biden had refused to reveal the purpose or function of the drones, leading to wild speculation. The FAA had issued "temporary flight restrictions" over Bedminster, New Jersey, which included Trump's golf course.

 The FAA said earlier in December, "Safely integrating drones into the National Airspace System is a key priority for the FAA. We look into all reports of unauthorized drone operations and investigate when appropriate," The FBI and DHS had released a joint statement on December 13 stating that "We have no evidence at this time that the reported drone sightings pose a national security or public safety threat or have a foreign nexus. The FBI, DHS and our federal partners, in close coordination with the New Jersey State Police, continue to deploy personnel and technology to investigate this situation and confirm whether the reported drone flights are actually drones or are instead manned aircraft or otherwise inaccurate sightings." "Historically, we have experienced cases of mistaken identity, where reported drones are, in fact, manned aircraft or facilities. We are supporting local law enforcement in New Jersey with numerous detection methods but have not corroborated any of the reported visual sightings with electronic detection," they added.

The presence of drones also led to air traffic in and out of Stewart International Airport being temporarily blocked, with New York Governor Kathy Hochul saying in a statement, "Last night, the runways at Stewart Airfield were shut down for approximately one hour due to drone activity in the airspace. This has gone too far."

Swiss Security Official Who Jailed And Smeared Ali Abunimah is a fanatical pro-Israel activist

Mario Fehr, who has boasted of banning Palestine solidarity demos, may have relied on bogus accusations by a Zionist lobby group to order Abunimah's detention

The Swiss official who ordered the arrest of renowned Palestinian-American journalist Ali Abunimah justified doing so on the false and defamatory basis that Abunimah is “an Islamist Jew-hater.” In the past, Fehr has taken pride in banning Palestine solidarity demonstrations. Mario Fehr, the head of Zurich’s Department of Security, made the bogus accusation in a recent comment to the Swiss publication NZZ, which also falsely characterized Abunimah as an “Islamist” and an “extremist.”

Swiss authorities detained Abunimah on Jan. 25, after they initially allowed him entry into Switzerland following an hour-long interrogation. Abunimah was deported on Jan. 27 after two nights, during which Swiss officials refused to tell him whether he was being charged with a crime. According to the Swiss newspaper NZZ, officers in Zurich successfully petitioned federal police for an arrest warrant after realizing Abunimah had travelled to the country in order to deliver a speech at an event organized by the Zurich Palestine Committee. Fehr explained the arrest by stating, in reference to self-described “non-religious person” Ali Abunimah: “We do not want an Islamist Jew-hater who calls for violence in Switzerland.”

It’s unclear how Fehr came to adopt this patently false claim, but the article in NZZ gives a hint. In painting the secular Abunimah as a jihadist, the story’s authors relied on a leader of a little-known group called “Never Again Is Now,” (NAIN) which characterizes itself as “the only non-profit organization in Switzerland dedicated exclusively to combating antisemitism,” says it “demands the uncompromising enforcement of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s definition of antisemitism,” and claims: “we… defend Israel against anti-Zionist agendas.”

NZZ quoted one of the group’s board members, Thomas Patzko, as stating “Abunimah and his platform are a mouthpiece for Hamas.” The outlet cited NAIN while insisting that Abunimah “delegitimizes the victims of the terrorist attack on October 7, specifically women and children” – a reference to Abunimah’s factual statement that “there is no credible evidence of a single rape on October 7.”

It’s not yet apparent whether these false accusations by Swiss media or the Zionist group led directly to Abunimah’s deportation. But at some point prior to Abunimah’s scheduled address, “the Zurich [regional] police had become aware of Abunimah’s planned appearance,” NZZ reported. “They had submitted a request to Fedpol for an entry ban,” the outlet wrote, adding “this request was granted” by “the responsible government councilor and security director Mario Fehr.”

What is clear, however, is the Zurich security chief’s allegiance to the Zionist narrative. At a “Rally in solidarity with Israel” on Oct. 10, 2023, Fehr openly stated that “the fate of Israel and its inhabitants is close to my heart” before rattling off a comprehensive list of pro-Israel talking points, ranting about Iran and quoting notoriously racist Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir, while demanding the Swiss government cease funding any development projects in Palestine.

1/27 — Israeli Soldiers Detained For Leaking 'Very Sensitive' Iron Dome Secrets To Iran

One of the soldiers faces a potential life sentence for spying for the Islamic Republic during a time of war

Two Israeli soldiers have been detained by police on charges of involvement in an Iranian espionage plot targeting “sensitive military installations” in Israel – including the Iron Dome missile defense system, according to Hebrew media.

One of the detained soldiers served at an Iron Dome battery “and documented classified materials at Iranian handlers' request,” Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom reported on 27 January. The other served at the Kirya base in Tel Aviv – where the army and Defense Ministry headquarters are located.

Both told interrogators that they were struggling financially and, for that reason, accepted an Iranian offer. They are reportedly set to be indicted.

The spy operation took place in September and October of last year, as Israel was at war with Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon. One of the suspects faces a potential life sentence for providing information to Iran during wartime.

They were initially requested to spray pro-Iran graffiti in certain areas. One of the soldiers withdrew from the operation when he realized he could face legal repercussions for espionage.

The other soldier – who was stationed at an Iron Dome battery – continued to provide his handlers with information and recorded a video detailing the operation of the missile defense system. Israeli army experts who reviewed the video determined that its contents could benefit Israel’s adversaries.

“I appeal to citizens. Anyone in contact with foreign elements should stop,” said Israeli Chief Superintendent Sarit Perez. “Identifying them as soldiers with access to IDF information led the Iranians to focus on military intelligence, including requesting details about aircraft damage from their missile strike against Israel,” he added, referring to Iran’s early October missile attack on Israeli bases which Tel Aviv responded to later that month with strikes on Iranian military sites.

Investigators are looking into possible associates or people who may have known about the operation but failed to report it.

According to Israel Hayom and other Israeli media outlets, Iran has been escalating espionage operations against Israel.

In late October, Israeli police and the Shin Bet security service announced that seven Israelis were detained on charges of spying for Iran by collecting sensitive information on military bases.
