Turkiye Eyes $6bn Arms Deal With Saudi Arabia

Riyadh and Ankara have significantly improved ties since the fall of the Syrian government to former ISIS and Al-Qaeda warlords

The Turkish government is looking to seal a $6 billion weapons deal with Saudi Arabia during an upcoming visit to the Gulf kingdom by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, according to Turkish officials who spoke with Bloomberg.

“[Turkiye] is trying to grow its defense industry and sees Saudi Arabia, one of the world’s biggest importers of arms, as a key market,” the New York-based publication reports, adding that the impending deal could see Riyadh “joining a Turkish jet-building project.”

Ankara reportedly wants to sell its Altay battle tank and missile defense systems to Saudi Arabia, the unnamed officials are quoted as saying.

It also wants the kingdom to partner in developing the KAAN fighter jet, a Turkish fifth-generation stealth fighter warplane developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) and London-based BAE Systems.

According to a report published by the Atlantic Council earlier this month, Saudi Arabia's interest in the KAAN stems from its long-delayed attempts to acquire US-made F-35 fighter jets.

“By pursuing fighter jet acquisitions from [Turkiye], Saudi Arabia is strategically positioning itself to reduce its reliance on western military hardware, including US military equipment. This shift is driven by complex political dynamics, especially with US restrictions on the sale of advanced fighters such as the F-35 and Washington’s prioritization of maintaining Israel’s qualitative military edge,” the US think tank says.

Bloomberg's report comes one day before Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan travels to Riyadh to meet with his Saudi counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, and other senior Saudi officials. On 27 January, Ankara announced that “Discussions are expected to focus on the situation in Syria and strengthening bilateral cooperation."

Saudi–Turkish relations have significantly thawed over recent years after a period of conflict over the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the kingdom's Istanbul Consulate in 2018.

In 2023, Riyadh purchased an unknown number of drones from Turkey’s Baykar. The Turkish arms manufacturer also signed a deal with the state-owned Saudi Arabia Military Industries for local production of drones in the kingdom.

Bilateral ties also improved following the Turkish-backed coup in Syria that saw the rise of former ISIS and Al-Qaeda warlord Ahmad al-Sharaa (previously known as Abu Mohammad al-Julani) to power.....

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said on Tuesday that Israel will “indefinitely” occupy areas of southern Syria..

Katz made the comments while visiting Israeli troops on the Syrian side of Mount Hermon, which is located on the Syria-Lebanon border. “The IDF will remain at the summit of the Hermon and the security zone indefinitely to ensure the security of the communities of the Golan Heights and the north and all the residents of Israel,” he said.

Israel has occupied the Golan Heights since 1967 and annexed the Syrian territory in 1981, a move not recognized by any country until the first Trump administration did so in 2019.

Israel began its latest land grab in Syria by capturing a buffer zone between the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and the rest of Syria that was patrolled by UN peacekeepers. The invading Israeli forces have also captured several towns and villages in Syria’s Quneitra Governorate.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu celebrated and took credit for the overthrow of Assad since he was an ally of Iran and Hezbollah. But Israel has also used the takeover of Syria by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), an offshoot of al-Qaeda, to invade and capture the land in the south. Israel also launched massive airstrikes in Syria to destroy military equipment.

Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso Officially Quit ECOWAS — VOA News Reports as the Sahel Security Alliance Forms Own Bloc

The West African regional bloc ECOWAS has formally recognized the withdrawal of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, after more than a year of diplomatic tensions. The latest development marks a significant shift in regional diplomacy.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) announced the three countries’ withdrawal in a statement Wednesday.

But ECOWAS urged its remaining 12 members to continue to recognize the national passports of the departing nations and trade with them until otherwise advised.

ECOWAS President Omar Touray told reporters in Abuja, where the bloc has its headquarters, that the decision was in the spirit of “regional solidarity and interest of the people.”

He said the commission had invited the three countries to a technical meeting, noting that any member state was welcome to return.

Relations between the trio and the regional bloc soured after the July 2023 coup that ousted Niger's president, Mohamed Bazoum, prompting ECOWAS to demand his reinstatement and threaten military intervention.

In response, Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso announced their exit last January and accused ECOWAS of failing to safeguard member states and of aligning too closely with foreign powers.

They also created a confederation called the Alliance of Sahel States and strengthened alliances with Russia, Turkey, and Iran to address internal security threats such as jihadists and armed gangs, as well as external pressures.

ECOWAS, founded in 1975, is West Africa's most influential political and economic bloc but has faced difficulties in recent years amid a rash of military takeovers.

In December, it granted the three departing countries a six-month grace period to reconsider their decision.

But on Tuesday, thousands of people rallied in support of the exit in Niger and Burkina Faso.

Thiel-Linked HHS Nominee Threatens MAHA Ambitions With Biotech Stance — Whitney Webb

Biotech investor and Peter Thiel associate Jim O’Neill is poised to usher in a deregulatory paradigm that would allow a proliferation of dubious products on the US market under the guise of “innovation” and “efficiency.”

Late last November, President Donald Trump announced Jim O’Neill as his nominee for deputy secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), where he would work under Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Trump’s pick for HHS secretary upon confirmation...

Built on a promise to eliminate industry capture of public health regulatory agencies and curb the influence of Big Pharma and Big Food, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s MAHA movement played a crucial role in funneling would-be Kennedy voters into the Trump camp. MAHA, in essence, granted the Trump campaign a tinge of populist legitimacy among Covid era dissidents, which grew out of the shuttering of RFK Jr.’s independent presidential run.

However, O’Neill’s business connections, both past and present, as well as his previous statements on public health policy, strongly suggest that he is not only unlikely to implement the policies that MAHA-centric voters are expecting, but that he may in fact pursue an agenda that stands in direct conflict with the main tenets of the MAHA movement...

In addition to O’Neill’s biotech connections, he also boasts significant ties to the CIA-linked company Palantir and its co-founder Peter Thiel. Palantir, notably, is undertaking considerate efforts to apply a pre-crime paradigm to public health events... Several of these contracts date back to the first Trump administration, when Palantir played a major role in the military-run Covid-19 biosurveillance and vaccine development / distribution program known as Operation Warp Speed – a program that has been heavily criticized by both Kennedy and the broader MAHA movement.

Indeed, Palantir has since further entrenched its role within the HHS apparatus, most recently via the CDC’s Center for Forecasting and Outbreak Analytics (CFA), a disease forecasting and mass biosurveillance program that Palantir runs significant amounts of data for.

Also indirectly connected to this CDC effort is Bill Gates, as the former vice-president of the Gates-connected Cascade Investment firm, Dylan George, now runs the CFA. Importantly, the Gates Foundation has significant investments in biotechnology, an industry that notoriously faces strenuous regulatory difficulties in getting its products through the standard Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval process. As a result, prominent players in the biotech industry, including Gates as well as others like Trump surrogate Vivek Ramaswamy, have embarked on an effort to dismantle the current regulatory paradigm and replace it with one friendly to “innovation,” or in other words, one with significantly less rigorous standards.

'We Will Not Withdraw Until We See Fit': Israel Digs Heels In South Lebanon

A recent extension of the ceasefire period will see Israeli forces maintain their presence and continue violent attacks in the south

Israel will not withdraw its troops from southern Lebanon until it deems that the Lebanese army has fulfilled its commitments in the ceasefire agreement, an Israeli military official told the Ynet news site on 29 January.

“Until the Lebanese army fulfills its missions and demonstrates good and sufficient control over the territory, we will not recommend transferring control to [the Lebanese army],” the source said.

The report comes after the extension of the 60-day ceasefire implementation period, which was supposed to see the Israeli army withdraw from Lebanon and the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) dismantle Hezbollah’s presence and infrastructure south of the Litani River.

The implementation period has now been extended until 18 February as a result of Israeli pressure on the US. The Lebanese state reluctantly agreed to the extension.

According to the Ynet report, the next three weeks will see Israeli troops “remain in southern Lebanon and conduct a long series of operations to destroy terrorist areas and collect weapons that Hezbollah has hidden and that still remain, mainly in the eastern sector, which borders the Upper Galilee.”

Thiel-Linked HHS Nominee Threatens MAHA Ambitions With Biotech Stance — Whitney Webb

Biotech investor and Peter Thiel associate Jim O’Neill is poised to usher in a deregulatory paradigm that would allow a proliferation of dubious products on the US market under the guise of “innovation” and “efficiency.”

O’Neill’s Connections to the Biotech Industry

..During O’Neill’s tenure in a top position at Mithril, the venture capital firm invested in several significant biotech companies. These include uBiome, which was also backed by Andreessen Horowitz and the Sam Altman-run Y-Combinator. The company was founded in 2012 “to sequence the microbiome,” allowing patients to “explore their microbiome” via the company’s microbial genomic test and their possession of the “largest microbiome database in the world.”

The company’s series B funding was led by 8VC, the venture capital firm created by Palantir co-founder and Thiel associate Joe Lonsdale. The company was later caught overbilling patients, pressuring them to take multiple tests when it was unnecessary, and also pressuring doctors to approve tests, including for patients with no symptoms. The FBI raided the company’s offices in 2019. In 2021, the co-founders were each charged with more than 40 criminal counts, including healthcare, securities and wire fraud.

Another biotech company backed heavily by Mithril during O’Neill’s time as managing director is Fractyl Health, which Mithril began funding in 2014. Fractyl has been developing 2 products, Revita – an outpatient procedure that modifies the lining of the colon to target obesity and type 2 diabates, and Rejuva – a “one-time gene therapy” targeting the pancreas meant to “enable durable weight loss and long-term remission of type 2 diabetes.” Neither of the company’s products have been approved by the FDA and clinical studies on them have yet to be performed, despite the company having been in business for over a decade...

The chair of Fractyl’s board is the co-founder of Mithril alongside Thiel, Ajay Royan. Another board member, Marc Elia, sits on the board of the Mithril-backed biotech firm Invivyd (formerly Adagio Therapeutics). Also on the board of Fractyl is former U.S. Senator Bill Bradley, who is also on the board of the Mithril-backed fintech and stablecoin-issuing firm Paxos. Bradley’s connections in tech also extend to figures adjacent to Jeffrey Epstein, as Bradley was notably affiliated with Ghislaine Maxwell’s husband Scott Borgerson and his firm Cargometrics—a satellite surveillance company that offers “unique data products and [software] solutions broadly to the investment management and maritime shipping & logistics markets.”🤔✍️

O’Neill has also had several notable connections to other biotech firms following his departure from Mithril in 2019. These include Oisin Biotechnologies, where O’Neill was a board observer from 2019 to 2021. Oisin develops therapies focused on longevity and “age-related diseases” that leverage a “new-non-viral delivery technology” they call Fusogenix Proteo-Lipid Vehicle...

Trump Orders Migrant Detention Facility At Guantanamo Bay To Operate At ‘Full Capacity’

President Donald Trump is preparing a migrant processing facility in US-occupied Cuba to house as many as 30,000 migrants illegally living in the US.

On the campaign trail, Trump made immigration a central issue, pledging to expel people from the US, with an emphasis on convicted criminals. On Wednesday, the President signed an executive order to make it possible to send some of those people to a migrant detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

“I hereby direct the Secretary of Defense and the Secretary of Homeland Security to take all appropriate actions to expand the Migrant Operations Center at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay to full capacity to provide additional detention space for high-priority criminal aliens unlawfully present in the United States,” the order says.

The migrant facility at Guantanamo Bay is separate from the CIA torture prison that was established during the George W. Bush presidency. However, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem made statements that draw parallels between the facilities.

“There might be some resources that could be established for the worst of the worst at Guantanamo Bay, and that’s something that he is evaluating along with our team at the Department of Homeland Security,” she told CNN.

During the Bush administration, Americans were regularly told not to worry about the unconstitutional torture taking place at the GITMO prison as the detainees were the “ worst of the worst .” However, the claim was debunked as an overwhelming number of the detainees at GITMO were innocent.

Haaretz: To Prove It's Different This Time, IDF Rebrands Jenin's 'Armed Thugs' as Hamas Battalion — Despite The IDF's Claims Of Targeting Hamas' Jenin Battalion, No Such Unit Exists —

The West Bank offensive closely resembles previous missions in the Palestinian city, where most armed individuals are young criminals who fled the refugee camp

Even on the way to the refugee camp in the northern West Bank city of Jenin, it's not difficult to see that the Israeli army operation there is just one more of the many that the military has carried out there in recent years. And it probably won't be the last.

The army's routes into the refugee camp in Jenin remain unchanged, and during a 15-minute drive, there is no gunfire or explosions. The residents have fled, leaving behind a scene of destroyed homes, cars and roads.

Army officials appear to have felt the need to explain what was different in this operation from prior rounds. "There's a substantial difference between this operation and the others," told Haaretz Col. A., the commander of the Menashe Brigade, whose full name cannot be disclosed according to new IDF regulations.

"In all the operations up to now, we carried out raids, but this time we want to neutralize the Jenin battalion," he said, adding that his goal is "to reshape the area" so that the army "can finish the job and confidently say that the Jenin battalion is not effective."

But even Col. A., who spoke in terms of "the Hamas battalion in the refugee camp," is well aware that there's no such thing. Until recently, senior IDF and Shin Bet security service officers disparagingly called them "armed thugs," young criminals who had found a haven in the refugee camp and had been getting a few hundred dollars to shoot at IDF forces.

But when Col. A. was asked when Hamas created a military battalion in the refugee camp, he was quick to acknowledge: "They call themselves a battalion, [but] It's not really a battalion."

Based on his comments, it appears that the army personnel understood that Israeli politicians were demanding that a link be made between the Jenin operation and the war in the Gaza Strip.
About an hour after security forces declared last week that it had begun an anti-terrorism operation in Jenin, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich announced that "after Gaza and Lebanon, today, with God's help, we've also begun to change the security outlook in Judea and Samaria," referring to the West Bank, adding that it was in accordance with "the war goals added by the security cabinet" at the request of Smotrich's Religious Zionism party.

In the days before the operation, the terms of a deal for the return of hostages and a cease-fire in Gaza had begun to be reported, and Smotrich and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had come under major criticism over the deal from their supporters.

Smotrich and his cabinet colleagues hoped that the Jenin operation, dubbed Operation Iron Wall, would provide a way of presenting the military campaign as directly related to the war against Hamas in Gaza.

The IDF appears to have applied combat methods from Gaza to other fronts where it has operated. Along the army's routes, bulldozers have been demolishing buildings, though in the Jenin camp, the damage is less visible, with gunfire marks being the most noticeable.
